There could be ton of discussions occured on the AoE III launch detached from AoE I, II and IV. But AoE III should remain the 17th-19th century colonial rts, as further expansion packs from AoE III D.E. can continued to be released in future. If the game has in-built online patch update system like AoE IV, then that is also fine.
