Is it possible to get the original AoE disc version to run on windows 10?
I have AoE Gold (Age of Empires + Rise of Rome Expansion) running on two Windows 10 machines. I also downloaded the Upatch HD ver 1.1 - Release 4 and installed that over the AOE installation. The game runs perfectly on both computers, with the exception of some invisible text in the chat box, etc. Nothing critical. The Upatch does not modify the original game, however, so if you want to play the 1997 AoE (no expansion), you’ll be playing it non-optimized with whatever standard resolutions are supported and possibly some graphical glitches (but I haven’t tried).
No problems on Win 10 here. I did however install both discs and after that the most recent patch I could find before I first started the game.
Yes you can play it on Windows 10. However, I recommend using UPatch for best SP experience.
I’m using Steam to play on Windows 10. Works very well and there is currently a huge discount for all AoE.
Doesn’t work for me - only works with UPatch. Win10 here.
I bought a ubisoft bundle off of amazon and both the original and RoR work perfectly. Not sure if I have any compatibility settings on, though. AoE2 however has the color glitch (pink water, bright green grass) so I just bought HD.
AoE/RoR works fine for me aside from the low res being in the centre of the screen - it won’t stretch, and the invisible chat box. The typical crash bug still occurs in RoR with the AI. Haven’t tried the upatch or voobly updates.
A few days ago I tried to install the original AOE on my WIN10 and I could not. At the time of opening the application always gave an error. I tried the upatch and it did not work. I tried to open in compatibility mode and it also did not work. Already I gave up: /
If the game, after install does not launch:
To fix the bug, saying 0xc0000022. Enable DirectPlay in “Windows features”. It can be found under legacy.

There are some YouTube videos about How to fix the color issue on AOE2 game through editing a batch file.
I don’t post the link because there are too many and some of them would not work.
For AOE 1, use UPatch to fix resolution problem.
Compatibility seems to vary depending on hardware and drivers, but I’ve never had a Win10 (or 8 or 7) machine that wouldn’t run AOE.
(And you can bet that AOE is always one of the first things I install.)

I downloaded uPatch for AoE1 and it feels like a completely different game, all because of the resolution. Had a blast playing through the campaigns with it.
For AoE2, before I bought HD, I would end the task explorer.exe and that always worked. I don’t know why but it did so I’d deal with it.
You need to enable direct play or something similar. I think that this is it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XYyGB-Tn3g
