Absolutely not. Snare is one of the best features in AOE3. Snare could be adjusted but should not be removed if AOE5 is AOE3 v2
Maybe it could be reserved for units with area damage and cavalry.
If its gonna be added it must only effect one unit not the entire formation.
I think we can all agree on that AOE3 engine, creativity and mechanic are the most unique out of all age of empires game.
If there’s ever going to be a 5th game, I wouldn’t mind for it to be similar to the third.
Snare is absolutely awful.
It is a mechanic implemented in AOE-3 to give more viability to melee attacks.
People are still allowed to dislike it. I always have in RTS games.
This entire thread is moot since much of the AAA gaming industry has become reticent to innovate. We’re not getting another AoE3. The best one can get is AoE3 mechanics clandestinely finding their way to other games. And when I say clandestinely I mean mechanics that only AoE3 players would recognize. Furthermore, this isn’t saying anything about the perceived contempt WE has for AoE3 for whatever reason.
There are still good to great games coming out of the AAA universe but when it comes to innovation you’ll find that in indie studios, which are producing great games.
The RTS community in general is pretty against change, too. This is why many devs, even indie ones, look to replicate the “classic” RTS formula and any attempts at branching out are punished (even AoE III, released in RTS’ heyday, sold well but struggles with retention and userbase size compared to AoE II or AoE IV).
I reckon if I’d have still been playing AoE in 2005, I’d have really enjoyed it. I liked AoM back in the day (and now finally have Retold, as well as the free version of III: DE). But I’ve always liked games that push the genre envelope. Alas, my opinion is something of a minority in RTS circles.
(and of course, things can be done well or done badly - regardless of innovation. I just like games that try to innovate, because without them nothing will ever move forward)
You missed out on AoE3 and I missed out on the Battle for Middle Earth games which stings to this day considering I’ve always been infatuated with Tolkien.
I don’t have much experience with RTS outside of AoE. I got AoM when it came out but my PC couldn’t run it so I had to wait until 2004 for a new PC. Waiting those 2 years was torture lol. AoMR is a respectable remake that I’ll boot up now and then when the urge arises.
I play 2DE on occasion and I keep track of what is going on with IV. I’ll probably pick it up again once the DLC drops. When it comes down to it I’m just a fan of the franchise in general. Each game scratches its own itch.
AoE3 blew my mind when it came out. My PC felt like it was going to explode. ES went balls to the wall on the graphics and the ragdoll physics still makes me giddy to this day. It’s not a nostalgia thing for me; I genuinely enjoy the game now as an adult and the DE has done it justice and fixed some of the fumbles ES made.
AoM also has it but it’s more subtle there.
After Age of Mythology Retold came out, things have changed, one can no longer say that one game has more than another, each one is different:
Game | Divine Powers | Shipment system | Landmark system |
---|---|---|---|
AoM RE | Yes | - | - |
AoE III DE | - | Yes | - |
AoE IV | - | - | Yes |
Their mechanics are so different from each other, that each one has its point in favor, and things to improve, but in its own style.
And then there is the time in which they are developed.
If we talk about an Age of Empires V, what do people want to imagine? I would say that:
- 1.- Temporally after AoE III, between the Napoleonic Era and the 1st or 2nd World War.
- 2.- In the Classical Age, an AoE 1 but improved in 3D, maybe an AoE2: Roma Ad Bellum Mod.
For the 1st case, maybe the IRON resource, or STEEL, or even OIL, would be necessary.
For the 2nd case, I think it would be more similar to Age IV.
Also consider that if we reach the Modern Age, perhaps the production of cities would be totally different and more complex: There would be hospitals, tents, political buildings, police? AoE IV set the bar high in regards to City Planning, especially with the mechanics specific to each civ.
AoE V I suppose will have to deal with that. More than anything it will have to deal with the fact that Town Centers “no longer collect food” (We are no longer in the feudal Middle Ages), that farms must be built “Outside the city” and the further away the better; how to create realistic aircrafts for combat, that are not the ones that levitate like Starcraft 2, or the ones that make too much noise like Moscas from Empire Earth.
In general I would say that AoE V does not have to have elements of AoE3, it should be its own game, but always remember the standards left by its predecessors, including the AoE3 (Divine Powers, Cards, City Planning, Landmarks, etc.).
Envoy System for AoE III?
You mean Shipment System, right?
There were Ages and there were Empires all 1421-1867 timespan
Please research the meaning of these two words and then come back!
Yeah.
The thing is that, I’m a Peruvian, my native language is “Spanish”, we have Dozen of words to translate Shipment to spanish:
- Envio, carta, sobres, correo, paquetes, carga, mercancía, productos, etc
Envio (Envoy) is the word they use in Spanish translation of the game, but if the use the word “Shipment” in English version, well, okey, is a synonym.
AoE 3 also has the Landmark system, at least for the Asian civs. In functionality, it’s most similar to the House of Wisdom where researching a Wing at a different Age grants different bonusses.
AoE 3 (Chinese Wonders):
House of Wisdom (Culture and Eco Wing):
Yeah, landmarks are an improvement on TADs’ wonder age-ups. Because of this, I consider landmarks a strength of IV.
