A lot of people on the polls it seems.
Look at the various polls. Nearly half thr civs are from Europe as is. People want to get more civs from outside Europe.
I have very little knowledge on history. So I can’t go for an argument which is what.
I thought they were latin
What? Nordic people also originated from Germanic?
We don’t have Normans. We have Sicilians which is a mixture of several groups, not just Normans alone.
They were germanic peoples that adopted a latin language
Yeah. Germany is called after germanic peoples, not the other way around
They are 90% Normans
Actually in lot of polls (including my own) people are not so much against new European civs, only that the next DLC(s) should be outside of Europe! Me included, as some may know, i would like Serbian civ to be added which is European civ, but i also would like before that some new civs from Asia and Africa.
In all respect, but like which polls ? According to Steam DB, AoE II DE is owned by at least 2 mln steam users. Daily game has around 12 000 players, today 24-hours peak is more than 19 000 players. The highest amount of voters on forum I see are votes for new maps. I will use data from latest team games, because it has more voters, which is 769. Let’s say those 769 voters vote in one poll that they don’t want European expansion - it wouldn’t be even a significant part of daily aoe2 de players.
If those polls meant anything I would asume that most of aoe2 civilization are much worse designed compared to civilization that start with +150 food. Let’s slap almost double the most valuable starting resource for civilization what an awesome design.
Respect and all, but if most of community don’t want any European related content, it would obvious now. There is no really need for spam everywhere “please, not europe”.
When it comes to Europe, I think we only have 4 civs left for a “full set”:
- Serbs
- Croats
- Swiss
- Romanians
The generic “Slavs” is better renamed as Rus. At the time the Ukrainian and Belarusian people were not distinct from other Rus people and didn’t have their own independent kingdom. So a case can be made that “Rus” includes all 3 East Slavs: Russians, Belarussians, Ukrainians.
A notable exception is Northern Europe: Danes, Swedes, Norvegians and Finns. But I think Vikings cover for the first 3 and I don’t think the Finns ever had an independent kingdom at that time.
And then there are minor nations like Albanians, Estonians, etc. Some would argue that “Lithuanians are in the game” but the Lithuanians were huge at that time. Google a map of Europe in 14th century and you will see Lithuania as the largest or second largest country in Europe.
Apologies if I missed something. I think the Irish are the Celts, and so on.
So assuming 39/48. 39 + 4 = 43. With 43/48 civs we could have the full European set.
Outside of Europe. I saw the Georgian & Armenian combo often mentioned. So 45/48.
In Asia, I don’t know what nations are left. We could have sub-Indian cultures or Tibet. But I think the Tibet will cause problems with China and AoE2 don’t want their game banned. As for sub-Indians that would cause the same problem as the Slavs being a general umbrella.
In Africa, it would be great to have Zimbabwe, Ghana and Swahili.
So my personal guess for DLCs would be:
Africa: Zimbabwe, Ghana, Swahili
Europe 1: Romania, Switzerland
Europe 2: Serbia, Croatia
Asia: Georgia, Armenia
That would lead to 48/48. But I haven’t heard anywhere that they can’t expand the 48 limit.
So you propose to add 4 European civs and two European like civs for the last 9? Seriously?
By this standard Croats Romanians and Swiss would also be minor civis.Only Serbia had an empire for a while Croats and Romanians were under Hungary.
Great historical insights and its awesome that you’ve explained their history and put up nice links. However from the tech tree and bonuses, its a ridiculously broken civ. Even more than Indians, Burmese and Cumans when they were initially released. Paladins that cost less, have all upgrades and have free bloodlines, villagers that can’t be killed by feudal age units, archers firing faster, cheaper farms and eco upgrades.
Even if historically Romanians shined in all those aspects and were an OP empire, that can’t be carried to the game as it is. Its ultimately an RTS game and needs balanced civs that have their strengths and weaknesses without being too OP on any standard settings.
Honestly this kind of argument is a bit silly. From this kind of logic, any polls are pointless, which doesnt make much sense with how much they are used
The polls dont mean that we can argue that it means that the community is all against them but it still means that theres definitely a need for something else
And the argument that “it would be obvious” seems to be a bit arbitrary.
Ngl the civ seems quite bland and just a mixture of different civ bonus from other civs, not a fan of it.
Which civs would you add as the last 9?
I think there is a sizeable difference between the Croats & Romanians and Albanians & Estonians. Literally the size of the nations in question. Not only territory-wise but population-wise.
And almost half the civs as European. Meanwhile India for some reason gets zero new civs.
I constantly change my list so really couldnt give you anything definitive since theres so much to choose from but prob:
- Bengalis
- Tamils
- Georgians
- Jurchen
- Gokturks
- Somalis
- Zimbabweans
- Nubisns
- Hausa/Kanem
Civilizations should be selected on the historical value impact they had not population or land size.Thats why we have normans aka sicilians.
So by that logic we should definitely add more India civs before touching all those eu civs you mentioned.
Even in that department you could argue that the Croatians & Romanians had more historical value impact than the Albanians & Estonians.
Nah. I think being a regional power with a unique culture is more important than impact simply because impact is very subjective
Your civ idea sounds good but there’s already a lot of European civs in AoE2. If one more civ is to be added to AoE2, it would have to be a Middle Eastern civ: Either the Kurds or Nubians (I choose Kurds).
