AOE2 Top Priorities: Three things that MUST be FIXED

I know, right?!

“We don’t have enough funds to sustain this game, so let’s give 50 thousand dollars to some players that we even gifted the game code.”

Cactus, if you organize a giveaway I will come with 3 copies but dressed in my skimpiest comehither outfit with big black combat boots and leather flog

Regarding the 3rd point:

(1) You complained about finding a lobby being time consuming in your first point. What effect do you think adding a fee to play multiplayer would have on the size of the player base, and therefore the waiting time to find games?
(2) Debating the pros/cons of this argument is pointless anyway. Millions have already bought this game, and all multiplayer features were included in that one off price. The idea that they can they just take that back, and say people now have to pay a subscription for something they already own is nonsense.

There is no demand for subscription based RTS.
Everyone here agrees aside you. It would tank the game.

I would be ecstatic if they made DE multiplayer subscription-based. It would push the player base back to Voobly where the game was actually fun.

I vote for $20/month.

We already paid for this game. This is not a free game. Monthly additional charge is not reasonable.

I don’t agree about Voobly being better, but thanks for the laugh

Was about to type the same. 11

It is true, that monetizing the game would, in theory, bring more money and hence more support. However the playerbase that exists right now, would not be too happy about it, no matter what you believe and no matter how money works, and they would just go play HD (or voobly) instead. AoE2DE is not in such a condition nor such a game that people would easily pay additional money for after their initial purchase. Especially when the earlier iterations didn’t need that either and they still work just fine. And since they said there will be no more DLCs, I can only wonder what their long term plan is. But I believe, they do have some kind of plan. If nothing else they are using AoE2’s good reputation to market their upcoming AoE4. But what happens after that, is to be seen.

On the contrary, it would instantly kill the game, and give Microsoft an EA-like reputation, that they would take decades to live down, aswell as possibly tanking the market for Remasters, due to permanent taint of monetization.

Emphasis on the theory. The rest of the post clearly explains why this is not so.

Well, since the whole current player base would be pissed about monetization and is way bigger than what the game would hope to attract after being monetized, it would surely be in very bad shape, and it would 100% deter people from buying AoE3DE and AoE4

- Cameras locations hotkeys
- Cycling button hotkeys (to be able to have differents type of building in a same ctrl group)
- Possibility to custom ui command pannel (mini-map placement, size and shape (rectangle feel better than parallelogram one take less space))
  • Select all type of units by shift clicking instead of double clicking
  • New builded gates could be choose to be closed or open
  • Units health bars colors betters visualisation (green= good; yellow= ok; orange= bad; red= critical)

That wouldn’t be very useful. A half-damaged archer, for instance, would be “ok” against archers, “good” against villagers and “critical” vs huskarls. And selecting a full army of units with different level of health would look quite ugly.

That wouldn’t work since I’m already using player colors for health bars. I can easily distinguish a 1hp, 50% hp and 100% hp unit. It’s unmistakable.

No matter what u use it s optional, not a one way decision that all players have to follow have a look on sc2 units health bars it good, simple clear and most of all efficient.

How is that better in the selected units tab? In AoE you can much more accurately tell how much hp different units actually have. That red icon doesn’t tell me if it is 1% or 15 or 24%. Which I personally actually like to know. Imo starcraft way is inferior.

Well, the contrast between green/red or color/black is good enough to see whether the health bar is full, half empty and so on. Also, I guess in Starcraft you can’t stack units as much as you can in AoE2, so there is no problem with stacked healthbars.

@CactusSteak2171 I agree for the contrast health bar not for the units icones but even why don t make it optional?
About stacking it s pretty much the same when you play with a bunch of zerglings or marines (even if it s more stack you can choose the classic units show bars or the default one who doesn t show them all the time).
@Hardform aoe2 mecanics has a lot to learn from sc2 : melee units pathing, cameras location hotkeys, cycling through ctlr groups hotkeys and some others stuff. I am not a sc2 players, I am a aoe2 one but I enjoy waching it competiteve scene and what i have seen over there make me want to have “the option” to be able to play aoe2 with a similar mecanics.
If i didn t care so much of aoe2 i will have switch to sc2 long time ago but i still preferer aoe2 for many reason such the variety of maps, the complexity of the game, the community my engagment to some streamer (T90, Nili and players than i follow since many years) but some stuf need to be improved for the good of the game.
have a look on my previous post and see by yourself if the color indicators isn t more efficient in sc2

Well I don’t agree that they would be more efficient. Imo the way it’s shown in AoE2 is better. The SC2 style just hurts my eyes, those boxes especially in the hp. Not only that, such a change achieves nothing so wasting dev time on it when there are more pressing and important concerns is not a good idea at all.
