AOE4 as of now, have 12 Civs, 11 Variants, thats almost Half Civs as Variants

House of Plantagenet for another English Variant

See this where its going? Variants are amazing bro seriously

Yes, I was thinking of the Angevin Empire (1066-1216) as an English variant, but the House of Plantagenet (1216-1485) could be good too (it would be a mix between the regular English and the Lancasters)…

Wait im actually against this i thinked lancasters was a civ in real life.Didnt they own their own nation?Oh no this definetly not happen in this game this is another fantasy civ then. This is bad like jd,zhu xi and ootd bad.Devs shouldnt add their fantasys to the game.Ayyubids a real civ existed in real life, golden horde real civ existed in real life, knights templar existed in real life.Devs no more fantasy civs pls only real ones.

Honestly I dont mind Variants but new civs should be the main focus with a variant or two.

I’m completely fine with any type of civilization; my favorite is even a variant! HUGE amounts of work go into each civilization (there’s an example I saw where each AoE4 civ has several times the amount of voicelines as the ENTIRE GAME of AoE2. Each villager has several hundred lines). Variants are similar to the originals in graphics, bonuses, and voicelines, but they’re still unique enough to have a very different gamestyle. I’m amazed that they can produce 2 new civs in just half a year.

And what about AOE2? They get 6 new civs this year, 0 Variants.

and what about AOM? Constantly new civs, no variants.

AoE2 requires a fraction of the effort to make new civs. Architecture sets and skins are regional, and as I have already stated, there aren’t nearly as many voice lines.

Also, there aren’t as many possibilities for civs in AoE4.

I don’t know about AoM; never played it.

Technically, Demeter and, before that, Freyr would be considered “variant civs” in the context of AoM…

This video explains the voicelines.

my gut feeling is telling me the upcoming dlc’s scots are also a variant, a variant of english

vikings meanwhile are a proper civ

Yes, maybe… but to what extent would the Scots be an English variant? Architecture, certainly, but if they have other voices and UUs, then they wouldn’t be an English variant…

jin didn’t get unique voices did they just units like other variants and spin on bonuses

Yes, if the Scots end up speaking English and not Celtic like in AoE 2 it’s going to be a huge disappointment…

we could argue it’d be lowkey disrespectfull to the scots to force english lines on them

Yes, it would be a scandal…

That seems possible, with the English being Archers, Infantry and Defensive, and the Scots being Infantry and Defensive. However, all expansions so far specifically state whether each civ is a variant or not. So it’s probably new.

I know it’s a small number of votes so far, but Variants don’t seem all that unpopular: [poll] Favorite AoE4 Civilization?.

lets be real for a second, aoe4 has binded any big streamer that’d be critical of the game’s handling behind NDA’s since earliest alphas, this isn’t even remotely a recent thing

so using those NDA bound streamers to gaslight people is to be expected

pros won’t go after WE on this because tourney money, i don’t blame them honestly, its basically job security

but anyone that isn’t after tourney money gets NDA that ensures their silence in critical moments

its kinda sad because the game’s quality is good enough to not need this shit

jin was marketed as a civilization, but turned out to be a variant

I stand corrected. I didn’t realize that was true.

@Croissantini, you don’t have to get so upset about this - it’s a GAME!
