AoE4 is less interesting than AoE2 because its units lack ‘coolness’ and ‘personality’

LOL, again it’s FIXED

btw, again it’s NOT game changer. Even 1900+ rarely used this.
Only top10 playerscan use it correctly, literally top10, not even top20.

It’s depth knowledge which does not give you any “advantage”.
i can give 1000 more usefull tips to <1500ELO.

The first tip: do not copy useless tricks from PRO. Focus on relevant issues.

fun facts:

  1. Viper failed a lot, while showing tricks, cause “it was already fixed”.
  2. Grubby says, how much much more unintuitive W3 is.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9er2dFTcfM&ab_channel=TheViper

It just summarized information, i’ve watched how Grubby guided Viper into W3.
And i’ve recieve same amount information, which is new, just because you are new to the game.

Again, it’s game depth…

Say this to the villagers stucking themselve at the woodline.
Then I stop playing AOE2DE ranked after 3rd game

I hope they fix their patch and their community is just as demanding as they are with aoe4

are you somewhat aoe2 hater?
or you Neural network, with list of his videos and you keep posting?
Jumping from one context to random another.

What does this have to do with my post? That’s just confirming ‘old = bad’

In IT, there’s no bug free program ever and compared with previous bugs AoE 4 had (Rus Relic, Abbasid infinite spearmen, Animation cancelling), the ones in AoE 2 don’t seem to be that significant in contrast. The only extreme broken example that comes to mind was Lithuanian Relics.

I wouldn’t call that hating. It’s rather just relying on what others say.

Wow, icons are so similar there. I’m sure making the sword a silvery grey and the arrow a woody brown wouldn’t visually help at all, sigh (sarcasm)… and brown leather and grey iron

But irrespective of color, their design being so similar is not the most ideal thing in the world either. Everyone talks about the 2D simplistic silhouettes being very readable and distinguishable, but this example would just cause me to do double-takes every time I look at it. And the issue is only compounded by the lack of colors

i’m just to lazy to correct him again. 0 problems so far, played and watched on current patch.

Anyway bugs are probably reported already, and >50% with dev’s comment.

what the point to “blame game for not fixing bugs” since 2000 until 2019. No one supported the game. And yes, DE was laggy as hell at release, and yes, people asked for bug-fixes.
To say more, they rolled back path finding a few times, cause “improvements” were so buggy.
What does it change… i do not understand.

casually forgets aoe2 HD era from 2013 till DE release, at least do your homework ahead of trying to prove smt

HD was buggy, lazy work. people keep playing on voobly.

what does it change, that Microsoft did not put any effort into the game?
Community did: 1080p was supported by amazing community, CA was introduced by community, first DLC by FE team (modders), i believe MultiQueue was introduced by Voobly(not HD edition).

how any of these fuck-ups from MS related to anything?

PS

thanks MS for DE and care after…

You can not say anything about aoe4, cause Microsoft did not support game for long time 15 or 18 years whatever(for me whatever)
Or what’s the point?

Aoe4 should not be changed, cause “nobody” (Microsoft) did not change a few bugs in aoe2? Or what’s the point?

Having played both AoE4 and SC2 I’d say that SC2 is actually more mechanic and strategic at the same time. AoE4 has got random maps, economic options and quite some civs but the ingame strategic adaption is very limited. In SC2 there’s many unit types that just work entirely different, with special abilities and quite some upgrades that can flip the game. Also the pacing opens lots of space for strategies or tactics like doing an ambush or quick raids to distract the opponent. Positioning also is extremely important and requires quite some quick strategic thinking. You literally always have plenty of options to deal with certain situations, may it be defensive macro oriented or offensive actions that force mistakes from the opponent. I honestly think that AoE4 (and probably also AoE2 from what I’ve seen from the few games I’ve played) being more strategical than SC2 is a myth, atleast when it comes to ingame decision making. Theory crafting for different match ups on different maps is something else but that’s not part of the real time strategy.

We are addressing many issues and we went around the bush, I am also learning, another question that I have, If the art of war tells you at what distance you should put the wooden camp or if it also teaches you to put the mill in the food well (I saw it in Tattoh’s series) @FloosWorld ?

Well, does AoE 4’s Art of War tell you each thing super specific? No, it doesn’t.
Do you mean Gurjaras by chance that can garrison sheep in mills? That’s a civ unique thing, not something general, so that’s like a civ unique thing in AoE 4.

As said - try it out and see for yourself.

Agree with all of your points, but not entirely with this one. The AOE-4 campaigns are saved by documentaries and narration, but we don’t see a single cinematic, plot, or adventure through the eyes of the protagonist and other characters. If they make the campaigns simpler than they are currently, I would be very disappointed.

All previous games have at least one intro cinematic that recreates a situation in the context of the game, but I don’t see any of that in AOE-4.

AOE-1:

AOE-2:

AOM

  • It also has cinematics in its campaigns:

AOE- Online:

AOE-3:

INTRO TWC:

INTRO TAD:

  • In addition to creating cinematics within AOE-3 campaigns with/without the game engine:

  • In addition to the fact that they took the “trouble” to remaster all the AOE-3 cinematics, for AOE-3 DE, which pleasantly surprised me because they didn’t do it with the other definitive editions (they should):

…And if AOE-4 is supposed to live up to one of the best references in the genre (StarCraft), why not make a campaign that really lives up to it?:

SC-1:

SC-2:

I bought this game because I like the campaigns of this game (one of the best campaing I’ve played in my life) and science fiction, not because a player plays it well competitively. I think a story is vital to engage the players.

I like the AOE-3 campaigns a lot, but I know that many don’t like them because they are not completely based on real events, but they did strive to create a good story.

Was it easier to make cinematics in the 90s and 2000s than it is now? And why does AOE-3, which is not so popular compared to the most prominent games in the saga, have cinematics, and also reworked campaigns and cinematics for the definitive edition?

These are things that make me scratch my head.

“AOE-4 has cinematics” some will say, but compare with all of the above to see which one seems you best:

I actually think aging up in AoE4 is much more interesting than AoEO.

Yeah AoEO has two civs with a unique mechanic for aging up which is cool, but the other five use the standard click a tech in the TC just like AoE2, which is the least interesting age up mechanic AoE has.

In AoE4 technically only the Abbassid age up differently. It is similiar to the Babylonians except much more interesting since their age up building has 4 choices for aging up that can be done in any order and give unique bonuses and access to different techs.

China though is also a bit different since their landmark choices are not exclusive like everyone else and building the second ones act as sort of extra mini age ups that gives bonuses, units, and buildings.

Then there is the standard age up method in AoE4 of landmarks which is already much more interesting and varied than the standard method AoE, AoE2, AoM, and AoEO use. In those games it’s really just when to hit the button that is the strategic decision. With the landmarks in AoE4 it’s when to age up, how many villagers to commit to it, which of the two landmarks to build, and where to build it. It also brings in 6 unique buildings for each civ to play with.

This makes age ups in AoE4 much more varied even if only one of the ten civs actually uses a totally unique mechanic to do it.

Eh some of them are.

I love AoE2, but it has a LOT of unintuitive and clunky stuff in it still. I have brought quite a few new players to these games and AoE2 is always the one they struggle with for things like that. Like animals decaying, not being able to harvest animals killed with anything other than a villager, the dozens of hidden bonus damages that are not shown anywhere in the unit stats, needing an upgrade just to get archers to lead moving targets, etc…

This is what AoE4 needs more than anything.

It is interesting if you look at the player counts yeah AoE2 has quite a few more, but the ranked pools between AoE2 and 4 are actually pretty close. Pretty much every RTS has more people in single player than multiplayer, but AoE2 skews that way much harder than AoE4. Probably because it has WAY more single player content. It makes me think that AoE4 could close that gap if it had more content.

I’m aware, however, Hasan specifically mentioned boars.

As for hidden bonusses, there’s at least the extended tool tips mod that shows them as well as training time.

As for food decay, I’m aware that they may be overwhealming for a new player but let’s be real - how many average players actually do care much about food decay and efficiency? I’ve seen players between 800 and 1k placing all their sheep under the TC, not much caring about efficient food gathering.
Personally, while I still want military units insta-killing animals in the game as part of laming (as controversial as laming is) especially on maps such as Socotra which is by definition a lame fest, I’d love for TCs to be able to kill boars as that’d make the Boar trick much easier for below average players. Funny enough, that was a bug that was in DE at some point. Iirc T-West made a video about it but I wasn’t able to find it.

For the Ballistics thing - I’d put that in the “getting used to” section as that’s something you learn within your first couple of games, of course depending on how patient you are.
However, I see how that can be unintuitive and rather want Ballistics to be instantly researched once you advance to the Castle Age, especially considering that the same tech existes in AoE 1 where it actually makes sense as that game covers Stone Age to Antiquity. By the Middle Ages people actually knew that they have to aim where people are going.

The ranked pool for both games is indeed close

  • 1v1:
    – AoE 2: 47,689
    – AoE 4: 32,808

  • Team Games:
    – AoE 2: 70,093
    – AoE 4: 54,457

(AoE 4 stats refer to Season 4)

However, AoE 4 has actually less active ranked players than AoE 2 + AoE 4’s ranked leaderboard doesn’t remove inactive players.

If you go to AoE4World’s overview of the Solo S4 Leaderboard and check when people played last time, you notice that there are people with 2 months or more. If you then go to aoe2.net and check when most people had their last match, you’ll notice how it’s 28 days because the leaderboard removes you after ~1 month of inactivity.

AoE 2’s ranked leaderboard works like AoE 4’s Quick Match leaderboard in that regard.

I’m btw 100 % in for more campaigns in AoE 4, maybe the next couple of campaigns will actually feature naval gameplay.

See that is your problem, you haven’t really played more than 2 games xD
You need to try other games, there you will see new innovations, people, methods, satisfaction, and more.
You have to explore, you need the experience to judge any game.
As I can see, your experience is nowhere near mine.
You are stuck with AOE4 and COH3 xD
This indicated that your experience is limited in these two games and you don’t know much…
Sorry but this is the reality.

My main takeaway from this is that AoE 3 DE oddly enough feels more modern than AoE 4 despite being the remaster of a 2005 released game.

You can play it on Steam…

You are missing AoM and AoEO… xd

Enjoy it…It is a masterpiece…I consider it the best AoE of all (perhaps only surpassed by AoE 3, for being more innovative in that sense)…

If the diehards don’t like it, they can go play the campaigns or go back to 2 HD…

The same, this was fixed with the expansions and with the battles and historical maps in 3 DE…

Let’s hope so… At least as far as the 4 civs that don’t have campaigns yet…

Yes, that’s why, how can it be… that a 2005 game looks better and feels more modern than a 2021 game?.. It’s fine if they want to take a lot of influence from AoE 2, but AoE 2 is still a game from 1999…the genre has advanced a lot since then…

I don’t get that feeling at all.

AoE4 feels a lot more streamlined and intuitive. Though AoE3 certainly has more content currently.

The cinematic design and such is just a design decision though. AoE4 tried something different with the documentary method. Some like it, some don’t. The graphics is also just totally subjective.

Ha people figured that out in ancient times the very first time someone tried to hunt.

AoE2 ballistics research is purely a gameplay thing, not a logical or historical one. Which is fine, but every single new player I’ve shown the game complains about it once they try archers.

AoE2 is never going to get rid of all the unintuitive and clunky things it has, old players would riot for some of them, but for the most part it’s great in spite of them, not because of them.
