AOM is the same engine as AOE3 DE, just more optimized (runs better)
that engine is as snappy as aoe2 is with unit control
as i said, a major engine upgrade/rewrite would be required to bring the tick rate up to reasonable level, idk why relic chose 8 hz, but trying to change that could break the entire backend of the engine for all we know, if i were in relic’s shoes i wouldn’t wanna touch that either
This is assuming that 8Hz wasn’t reasonable in the first place. “running on a wide variety of machines” seems like an reasonable rationale to me. Especially for a franchise like Age where the last non-remastered mainline entry was in 2005. Maximising hardware compatibility seems like a no brainer.
pretty sure 8 hz was a thing as far back as COH1, back when essence was first created, and given the terrain deformations and all other sim in that game i can see why they’d set it at 8, any headroom helps, but for better or worse, everything is now probably written for 8 hz so its a tough position, starcraft 2 has far less to simulate compared to COH with its dynamic map deformations and what not
Well in the end, i don’t think, that many really believe, that it’s easy to implement. But for many players its just super super annoying. I mean, i have 2700h in AoE4 hitting Conq several times. Not bit achievement, but i play the game a lot. And the more and more i play it, the more and more it annoys me really!
If there will be AoE5 or any other good RTS besides of Sc2 (played 14.000 games in sc2 … can’t play it anymore) i won’t stay with aoe4. It’s sad.
Also a lot of pro’s didn’t switch to aoe4, because they can’t stand this, what i can truly understand. But the disconects and everything else on top is right now super annoying.
I hope they will announce something cool soon, also vor aoe4, i can’t believe they make aoe5. But if they make it again on such an engine …
Yes, it’s probably around there…an AoE 4 in Ancient or Early Modern Times (will it be a remake of AoEO or AoE 3?)…
Yes, it seems you’re saying AoE3 and it already causes hives…
Yes, no way, even though it will look great…
Of course, it happens to me that after an hour the game lags a lot and becomes unplayable online…
Yes, the Bang Engine…
just wanted to clarify i wasn’t talking about memory leak related lag that happens hour or 2 in at times, i was specificaly refering to inputs needing 100+ms to process no matter the framerate in aoe4 and all other essence engine games (before you correct me gorb, yes DOW2 was far worse than that initially but they did patch that up to be at least the same as aoe4)
I wish Rise Of Nations would get redone. I loved the modern part of that game.
But back on topic, I dont see AOE5 anytime soon. They are done pumping out civs for AOE4.
Yeah, anyway, I just wanted to share my experience…
Yes, a RoN DE for 2028 for the 25th anniversary… and then if they can, a Rise of Legends DE for 2031…
Yes, I don’t expect anything from AoE 5 until 2027 at the earliest, at the latest 2029-2031, since Relic is now focused on finishing CoH 3 DLCs and starting to develop DoW 4 by 2027, so I would see DoW 4 by 2027 and then AoE 5 by 2029 and then obviously CoH 4 in the Pacific by 2031…
I miss Westwood Studios
There was a Job opening telling that the candidate should have Unreal Engine and Strategy Games Work Experience
Fonte: Game Rant Rumor: Future Age of Empires Games Could Be Using Unreal Engine 5
Now that we know that Relic is not the company working on DoW4, and another CoH title from them is extremely unlikely for the time being, it’s expected they would focus their team on something worthwhile that brings them significant profit/payment. Note that Earth vs Mars and other potential small indie games they might try further are made by a small part of their team, a division called Relic Labs, in an effort to diversify their market, however the main team needs a big project. The only possible follow up I see for Relic is to work on the next AoE title. They were also hiring people with Unreal 5 experience a while ago.
Also, not too long ago an unexpected partnership between World’s Edge and Frostgiant Studios for a AoE4/Stormgate bundle was accompanied by a social media post where WE was stating “the friendship” they have with Frostgiant.
Frostgiant recently released Stormgate after much hype and anticipation, but to very poor reception and sales. This means that Frostgiant is now really considering its options to survive as a studio. However their game did use Unreal 5 and they also have massive experience in RTS behind and have developed their own technology in Unreal 5 for specific parts crucial to RTS. Their only choice now is to contract, and the only big contract they can get when it comes to RTS is the Age of Empires franchise. So I think there’s a possibility they could get involved as well. I would keep an eye on them as well.
So yes, I do think an AoE5 or AoM2 might be in the works.
If that is the case, I really hope WE’s recent low effort and inconsistent expansion experiments are more of fillers before the next big release rather than their real vision for the direction of the franchise
Please keep Frostgiant as far away from AoE as possible.
Relic Is not developing DOW4.
Totally agree with you about that.
Stormagate Is horrible. I would be scared about a new AOE developed by them
Relic will not develop the future titles. Ad you said, World’s Edge hired new graphic director with Unreal Engine experience.
Relic owns its Engine": Essence. It’s a good Engine but old at the same time because It not supports many modern features like DLSS.
About next developers my suggestions could be: Forgotten Empires (they have more than 200 developers) and Tantalus.
There are also other RTS developers. Personally i never thought to Relic for AOE. I mean the announcement was a surprise.
So, we Simply don’t know.
Hovewer i tried to explain also my toughts about a future of the saga here (It’s a very long post)
It’s a game with good ideas, like the points of interest on the maps, but I think repeating the SC-2 theme was a bad choice.
Graphically, it’s not bad. It’s improved noticeably.
I mean mainly because of the leadership at stormgate which has been out of touch and just bad.
I’m sure they have some capable devs.
I bet the game could even be pretty good if it was actually finished.
