AoEII:DE hangs when starting

Hi. I cannot play the game. It was installed using the XBOX app in Windows 10.

When I click “Play” from the XBOX app, or when I try to start the game from the desktop link, a splash screen appears with the message “starting session…”, but it hangs there and never starts.

In the Event Viewer, two application error messages appear.
First one is a .NET runtime error:

A few other games present the same problem. For example, DOOM Classic 1993 behaves in a similar way. Quake, however, works perfectly.

I have Ultimate Game Pass.

Thanks in advance.

Windows updates ?
Updates common drivers ?

Tried to reinstall it? Sometimes these kind of stuff can have internal issues, where a reinstall can work wonders !

I have tried everything commonly suggested… you know:

  • Running sfc.
  • Running chkdsk.
  • Uninstall / Reinstall / Repair GamingServices.
  • Try to fix .NET Framework. At this point, it’s clear that it is a famework problem… however I have never find a solution or a clear procedure for uninstalling / repairing the framework. I have tried the Framework repair toolkit but it doesn’t work at all (it says that problems are corrected but that’s not true).
  • Starting in safe mode, disabling services, clean start… you know.
And the problem is still there. I’m seriously thinking about reinstalling Windows!!!

Any idea about this? I have weeks trying to fix it without success.
Recently, I installed Doom Eternal… same problem, exactly the same, the game never starts.

Well the repair tool can sometimes help, but just go into Programms deinstall them all, and download a fresh one
