The last patch fo AoM introduced 7 new personalities, offering up to 10 choices to customise the skirmish experience, through the behaviour of each specific AI player.
Being an AI fan and playing a lot against it with my buddies I cannot resist recommending the addition of this system to AoE II as well.
The benefits would be many:
- a more tailored experience according to the taste and gameplay habits of the players.
- better simulation of a historical scenario within the skirmish context, better immersion.
- empowers AI in custom scenarios without having to rely on AI modding.
- enables training against different opponent’s behaviour, useful for competitive play.
- increased replayability.
I can’t tell how much work this would be but I’m confident it would be worth it.

Custom AIs do exist but it would be nice to have a set of official AIs with different personalities. Also the ability to give each AI player a different difficulty.
A very significant percentage of players basically exclusively plays skirmish or coop vs. AI so improving the AI variety would greatly improve the game for those players.
One very common issue is that many casual players are not good at defending against early aggression but the lower difficulty AIs provide little challenge in the late game.
Something like the overwhelmer AI would likely be fun for many people. No early skirmishes to worry about but then nice big battles later in the game.
Being able to give allied AIs personalities that make them mostly focus on supporting the player is also pretty nice for many people. Being able to hide behind an AI that never attacks on it’s own until you are strong enough to go fight the enemy AI.
Also interesting to balance out matches between payers with different skill levels.
Like give that one friend that rarely plays AoE an AI that supports him but doesn’t play aggressive. This way you can both get an enjoyable experience.
