A couple of things: first do you have a back gold safely tucked further away from the front? May want to gather from there if its safer.
If not… skirmishers can certainly help. Investing in a mangonel just for the archers can be expensive.
Depending on your civ if you’re going for knights or eagles get a decent mass and both armor upgrades and you should be able to push his archers away provided he isnt in Castle Age as well due to heavier funded aggression. I find that if you want siege to scare some archers a scorpion is more accurate and cheaper and handles archer fire nearly as well but its not the most recommended for newer players
There are lots of factors to consider. But the best defense is to hit his resources so he cant focus on yours
