Perhaps for an alpine DLC…

what should the austrian unique unit be?

Doppelsoldner or Landsknecht…In AoE 3 the first one is a German unique unit and the second is a mercenary unit (in the real life it was the other way around) and in AoE 4 the second one is the HRE UU…

okay and the civ bonuses?

If you’re planning an Austrian civilization for Age of Empires 2, I’d avoid making it a “generic gunpowder civilization” because the Turks, Bohemians, and Burgundians already occupy a significant portion of that space. The most distinctive features of historical Austria would be:

The Habsburgs and their multinational administration.
The border hussars and light cavalry.
The fortress warfare against the Ottomans.
The modern artillery of the 16th-18th centuries.

It could look something like this:

Austrians

Gunpowder and Fortress Civilization

Civilization Bonuses
Universities cost 50% less wood.
Gunpowder technologies cost 25% less.
Castles and Towers fire +1 projectile in the Imperial Age.
Town Centers support +10 population.

Equipment Bonuses
Markets generate 10% more gold in trades.

Unique Unit

Doppelsoldner/Landsknecht: Heavy infantry with area damage

Grenzer: Light frontier infantry. Fast.

Bonus against gunpowder.
Resistance to conversions.
Ideal for representing the Croatian-Slovenian Military Frontier troops.
Unique Technologies

Castle Age: Military Frontier

Barracks produce units 25% faster.

Imperial Age: Habsburg Reforms

Gunpowder units fire 20% faster.
Wonder

Could be Schönbrunn Palace or St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

If you’d like something more original and less “Bohemian 2.0,” I like this idea:

Alternative Bonuses
Each Town Center grants +5 population.

Relics also generate a small amount of food.

Economic technologies cost 20% less.

Stables produce units 15% faster.

This better represents the Habsburg administrative monarchy: a strong economy, a large population, and sustainable armies, rather than relying solely on cannons.

In fact, for Age of Empires II, I would see them as a hybrid of Bohemians, Teutons, and Magyars: a stable economy, fortresses that are very difficult to take, and excellent frontier light cavalry.

did you do this with AI?

If the Austrians get added, then I can imagine that it would use the same dialogue as the Teutons because the Austrians are a German-speaking people. The architecture set for the Austrians would probably be the Central European one.

somehing about mining gold… maybe to get wood while mining

maybe something about trade to simulate their danubian position (maybe as a team bonus)

and maybe a bonus to foot units.. like relics gives +1 PA to foot units (limit at +3PA)

and somthing to monks.. like monks have +10/+20hp

I would give them a heavy crossbow (more dmg, less rof) as a UU and landskanecht as a similar to condotiero (a UU from imperial that can be shared with allies)

i agree about a mining bonus. the city of salzburg is placed near salt deposits (hence its’ name)

Yes, otherwise you have these options:

Austrians (from the Napoleonic Era AoE 3 mod):

  • Civilization: The Austrians have special technologies and bonuses that make them a powerful civilization The Austrians age up with Food and wood instead of food and coin, and instead of only food for age 1, it costs food and wood. Austrian Settlers are much cheaper than those of other civilizations and get even cheaper by every age. They have special unique fortified buildings for defense. Their politician system provides a similar array of options at each age-up: either resources, settlers, Mercenaries, or defensive buildings. The Homecity contains powerful cards for improving their native allies and mercenaries. Buildings repair themselves automatically and immigrants from European countries.

And those from the Age of Chivalry AoE 2 mod:

Civilizational Benefits

Team Bonus: Scouting cavalry (including Militia Lancer, Szlachcic, and Wend Raider +2 LOS

Policy Decisions (aka Crowns)

Hausmacht - Castles +1500 HP, Spear Infantry +1P armour, Enables Cuman Auxiliary, enables research of Plackart

Romzug - Ministeriales +1 attack, Handgunners have +1/2P armour, Enables Reichsritter, enables research of Granulated Gunpowder, enables conversion and technologies related to it

Unique Units and Technologies

Gefolgsmann -Lancer with attack bonus vs. siege weapons

Cuman Auxiliary - Cavalry Archer with fast firing rate; requires Hausmacht

Doppelsoldner - Heavy Infantry with powerful but slow attack, damaging adjacent units; requires Maximilian Reform

Ladsknecht - Unique upgrade to Pikeman

Maximilian Reform - Upgrades Pikemen to Landsknechte, Enables Doppelsoldner.

Wonder: St. Stephan Cathedral (IV)

maybe get some food from mining instead?

thank god I didn’t read it. i only needed to catch stuff like faster working barracks and faster firing gunpowder units to realise it was the product of a robot that looked up civ bonuses from the game Age of Empires

that’s correct

Oh god…more Germanic civ discussions…

Habsburgs is a scrapped civ from AoC and would probably be based on Austrians. Austrians and Swiss are two civs that I want to see in the game.

By the way is there to much Germanic civ? Teutons, Gots, Vikings, Saxons, Danes, Varangians, (Franks+Britons)… total 7.

so i’ve heard, and i don’t understand how it could have been conceived, because civs are supposed to be people, not dynasties

So, basically, the Austrians of the 16th century (using the Germans from Age of Empires 3 or the HRE from Age of Empires 4 as examples)… the Teutons in Age of Empires 2 are basically the Teutonic Order…

No bro you know better! Cmon if you want to suggest a civ do it from your knowledge since based on your post history YOU KNOW THINGS and don’t need machine help

Maybe Habsburgs was just a name and civ would represent Austrians. Civs names are usually debetable. Byzantines that refers Eastern Roman Empire is used for Romanoi, Vikings that means naval riders is used for Norse ext ext.

how about you design the austrian civ? you’re eager to make an expansion aren’t you?
