Automating unit production and farm placement

Hello, given the new Spirit of the Law video that came out, what do you think about automating unit production and farm placement? Aren’t we going to put too much automation into AoE II? Also what about that “seek and destroy” unit movement (basically like auto-scout, but units attack if they find enemies) he mentioned that could be added?

I don’t think so. If people concern about the game becoming “too easy” or “auto-everything” then give these QoL some little drawback, like make farms take double building time if you place them with this new feature, or make auto-queue units take a little more time that a manual queue. Everybody happy.

i’ve just used auto farm placement for the first time, and it was a game changer, for the better. this feature was very much needed.

In what way it was a game changer for you?

it saves me the concentration needed to place farms correctly… until a few months ago i actually took my time to place them as close as i could to the mill… but then i understood how time and energy consuming it was and started to place them hapzaradly. now that inconvinience is gone.

the other feature that is a massive game changer is the force drop button. this one will go down in history as the feature that we wonder how we ever managed without it before.

I am pretty sure if devs could have done those things 25 years ago they would have done them such as auto drop off.

Well I’m pretty sure of the contrary of what you said instead

Really? Why do you think that?

I find it unnecessary, messy farms are not a big deal.
Having to constantly re-villagers on the hand… honestly I cant be bothered to actually play the game because of how much of a chore it is, I rather just watch other people play since I’m not the one who has to do that nonsense.

It is, when you have limited space. For example you got pushed to the corner in Arena.

Well, the very same devs added an auto queue to AoM in the Titans expansion.

In the early dark age you are waiting to get 50 food to produce the next villager… before this new button, you had to manually select the 5 villagers you have on sheep, make them drop the food, and task them again on the sheep. doesnt seem like a very heavy chore, does it? But think of feudal age when action starts. you definitely want to keep military production simultaneously with villager production. All this without losing the focus on the action. Thanks to this button, you can go to your base, select all villagers, press “a” (the hotkey), and thus you will get the 45 gold needed to create the next archer or whatever it is that you want to create.

thats the reason I claim that the drop resource button will go down in history as an enormous addition: it facilitates resource gathering without losing focus.

Yes, but indeed it’s AoM, a separate chapter of the “Age of” series with its own unique mechanics and a much different balance than AoE II. Having that mechanic there doesn’t imply it’s ok having it in another game, although similar in structure.
Moreover that addition was very controversial and it still is today

I might be stupid but I played a game yesterday and didn’t find how to use the auto farm placement.
How do we do it?

You hold shift while hovering a farm over a TC or Mill. It can be very finicky and buggy (what a surprise), but it does work.
