Aztec God Power Concepts: What Aztec God Power(s) Would You Like to See?

Hey AoM fans!

I recently watched a video by RobbyLAVA on YouTube and he shared some excellent ideas for god powers. I also did some brainstorming and came up with a few ideas of my own, though they could definitely be improved. The list above includes a mix of RobbyLAVA’s and my god powers.

I would love to hear your thoughts on these ideas and what other god powers you would like to see in the game.

God Power: Smoking Mirror

  • Use sorcery to summon illusions – thick smoke rises, which then creates identical clones of the selected unit or allies. These clones deal no damage (balance reasons), but every two or three hits they land generate additional clones. This causes chaos and confusion for the enemy player.

  • This makes it difficult to tell which units are real and which are illusions. This could cause the enemy to waste valuable time and attacks on fake units. Could be used for offensive and defensive plays like entrapment, escape, and jukes.

  • All illusions disappear when the god power duration is over.

  • Inspired by Phantom Lancer from Dota 2 example: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/M3y9KK0Z7oY

God Power: Face of the Moon (credits go to RobbyLAVA on YT)

  • Summons Coyolxāuhqui’s head - large flying object, mid HP, big LOS, low speed, steadily summons Centzonhuitznahuah (star brothers), deadly but very short-lived myth units, join combat within her LOS.

  • High repeat cost, low cooldown (only if head dies)

  • LORE: Huitzilopochtli sprang from his mother’s womb and immediately decapitated Coyolxauhqui and flung her head into the stars. Reason? She and her brothers conspired to murder their mother.

God Power: Rain of Fertility

  • Summons and floods a patch of land area full of fish.

  • Can be summoned behind your base for safe fishing.

  • Docks constructed in this water area has its cost reduced.

  • Must be within your LOS.

God Power: Xiuhcoatl (Turquoise Serpent) (credits go to RobbyLAVA on YT)

  • Trace a short line on the map with your mouse cursor; after a brief delay, it is scorched with turquoise fire, dealing heavy localized damage to any unit within

  • Slow and telegraphed, abundantly dodge-able.

  • Mid repeat cost and low cooldown

LORE: This is Huitzilopochtli’s choice of weapon.

God Power: Deep Sleep (credits go to RobbyLAVA on YT)

  • All units and buildings in a large area fall asleep (cannot act); wake if anything nearby is attacked, never auto-targeted

  • Mid duration; mid repeat cost, high cooldown

  • The Black Mask of Ixtliton represented perfect, peaceful sleep, unbothered by fitfulness or nightmares.

God Power: Flayed Rippers

  • Human soldiers are granted the ability to wear the skins of the deceased.

  • Soldiers taking advantage of this ability must be in the targeted area of effect spell.

  • They are visually upgraded (add on: skins).

  • Their frightening aura causes enemies to do less damage and impairs their movement.

God Power: Winds of Feathers

  • Summons a gust of feathered winds that travels in a snake-like path. Friendly units gain increased movement speed while inside the gust, while enemy units caught in the same area are slowed. Useful for both chasing enemies and escaping danger.

God Power: Pitfall Trap (credit goes to RobbyLAVA on YT)

  • Plant a small, invisible zone on the ground; when stepped on there is a moment’s delay and all units atop it fall in and trapped for 30 seconds and losing 50% HP but not targetable.
  • Plant a small, invisible zone on the ground; when stepped on there is a moment’s delay and all units atop it fall in and trapped for 30 seconds and losing 50% HP but not targetable.

  • Low repeat cost, mid cooldown

  • The Pitfall of Mictlan is made up of sharp pointy bones of the deceased.

LORE: It was used to capture Quetzalcoatl while he was gathering bones.

I just came across this thread now. Didn’t realise there was already one on potential Aztec godpowers, probably would have been good if mods caught mine and merged it into this one. Some interesting ideas here.

Anyway, I came up with another GP idea, in addition to the volcano power I mentioned in my previous thread: Potential new GPs

Avalanche/ Mud slide: This is another big mythic age destructive power, that is a hybrid of other existing powers. You target a wave, similar to great flood, and a wall of mud surges through an enemy town. It does less damage to buildings and units than great flood. Although it sweeps units away, it clogs the ground in mud, which sticks enemies in place for a few seconds and then slows their movement considerably. In addition to this, affected buildings are swamped in mud which slows unit production times for the duration. So it’s a hybrid of great flood, pestilence with snare/ slow thrown in there. Thoughts?

Yes, we would see god powers relatively similar to those of Egypt (rain, vision, eclipse, plague of serpents - for Quetzalcoatl -, ancestors, meteor)… from Greece we could see lure, wither, ceasefire (for the Flower Wars), restoration and pestilence (as a nod to the smallpox flu that the Aztecs had after the arrival of the Spanish in 1519)… and finally “obsidian weapons” (similar to flaming weapons of the Norse and lightning weapons of the Chinese)… In the Return of the Gods EE mod they have these powers, for example:

God powers

Archaic Age

  • Fire Strike (Huitzilopochtli): Call down a fiery serpent to damage all units over a small area. Deals more damage in later ages. Weak against villagers and buildings.

  • Decoys (Tezcatlipoca): Target anywhere to create decoys. Decoys look like soldiers but deal 0 damage when attacking. Creates more in later ages.

  • Great Abundance (Quetzalcoatl): Target a dropsite to cause all resource deposits on that dropsite to be worth more for a short time.

Classical Age

  • Jaguar Night (Coyolxauhqui): Summon a pack of Jaguars hostile to all and blocks other godpowers for a short time.

  • Hand of Fire (Huehueteotl): Target an area to create a circular wall of fire that damages enemy units and heals your own.

  • Warrior’s Blessing (Xolotl): Target a group of Youth Barracks soldiers to promote up to 6 of them into noble soldiers.

Heroic Age

  • Amoxoaque Forest (Mayahuel): Target a group of enemies to turn some of them into trees, which provide a small line of sight and can be gathered from.

    • Amoxoaque Tree: Trees which provide Line of Sight and can be gathered quickly. Can be formed from the Mayahuel’s god power or by the special ability of her myth unit. Falls after eight minutes.
  • Night Winds (Xipe Totec): Target an area to infect it with sickness, causing enemy units to lose hit points.

  • Death’s Awakening (Mictlantecuhtli): Summons Shadows of Mictlan, numbers based on the player’s population count.

Mythic Age

  • Tlalocan (Tlaloc): Tlaloc’s realm incarnated upon the Earth in the form of the Tlalocan, a unique indestructible building which can be placed on land or water, but can be captured by other players. Gives +10 population, trains Tlaloque at a reduced cost, grants bonus resources for Prisoners sacrificed here, and blocks enemy god powers. When placed on water, heals naval units and is a drop site for fish.

  • Volcano (Tonatiuh): Summon a mighty Volcano that causes great damage to units and buildings in a modest area. Leaves behind a patch of charred-rock that renders the terrain where the Volcano stood unbuildable for the rest of the game.

  • Death from Above (Coatlicue): Summons packs of Tzitzimime near enemy military buildings for a modest duration. Functionally similar to Fimbulwinter, but can be stronger if enemy players have a large number of military buildings on the map.
