Discuss Aztec Outlaw Replacement
First of all, props to the modder. Not only I think the idea goes in the right direction but also was made with care; the Xolotl warrior model is beautiful!
I would have a word with them to know if I can help them in any capacity.
Then, there are some questions.
1.- Balance: This mods try to adress the main weakness of the aztecs towards a more “viable” civ, one that can’t be defeated just by massing skrims, however, devs had already offered some solutions in the original design. The new units are not directly a problem, but the fact that they are aviable inmediatly in age II makes aztecs innecesarely OP.
2.- Cuachicqueh role: one of the factors that makes aztecs so vulnerable to skrims despite having pretty good units against them in the forms of Coyotes and Jaguars is that they are still infantry. Although is nice to have this historical adition to the roster I don’t think that the problem is solved in any capacity if a new version of an already existing unit is added to the aztec roster.
3.- Mixtecs: discussing the reach of the mexica empire is a whole theme on their own, but let’s roll with this. Mixtecs really didn’t used the blowgun that much, which was more of a Caribbean and jungle mayan weapon. Instead Mixtecs used extensively the sling. To avoid a confussion with the Macehual I offer this solution: change the Macehual animation to use the Eagle Scout atlatl, since it was more widely used by the aztecs than slings or bows, and keep the Mixtec “schavione” as an slinger.
4.- Xolotl: I loved the reference and i see it a very Age of Empires solution, even if it isn’t great historiography. Perhaps make it very limited, like 6 units, very cheap and with the stats mixed of cuirassier and hussar. Change the name from “Warrior” to "Cahuayero, use the AoE II icon and we are good to go.

Yes, sorry, I made the units thinking in Late Game/Treaty Mode and I did not consider that. Which Age would you consider the right one?
Is not exactly a new version of another unit: it is based on Coyote for HP, Speed, tags and attack and price, but thay inflicting Area Damage gives them a completely new role, a very deadly role. In my recent games with that mod, those 12 (previously 16) units always made a difference on the field of the battle, even if their unique use were deleting artillery/skirmisher masses.
Yes, I am with you with that. This Mixtec Blowgunner is a way to do it, but also is not my preferred solution
Atlatl was not very used for commoneers in war. At least, not for Aztec commoneers.
I won’t put this unit in game. I made them as a AOE II fan, but I don’t want them in the game. Thay are here as a joke placeholder, but even that way they are not worst than the Comanchero for Aztec.

I think the best solution would be to set this new units for ages III and IV, as in age II very few civs can bring actually menacing skirmishers, so it would be an overkill to fight anena and crossbows with schiavione.
Soon I will update the mod. I have given them a Chipulcozcatl, (seashells necklace) and a feathered texure costume.
Also, I gave them a new semi-unique Portrait, new Strings with the name “Cuachic” as it is named in Mendoza Codex and Sound files, shared with Skull Knight.
