So, let’s talk about game balance, and LAZY units.
If you want to make the trebuchet not be able to really do damage at long range to units, fine, I get it. Long range trebs when microd are a bane to ships. Heck, with enough trebs, they are able to take out infantry too. And other seige engines. But let’s talk about balance. And targeting.
The trebuchet is able to attack infantry in range, any time its set up. you literally point, click and it fires. Yay. But it won’t auto-attack enemies. Unlike ANY other unit, it requires micro to attack enemies. In other words, it requires the players full, constant and undivided attention on a single unit (or more likely group of units) to have any effect whatsoever.
The trebuchet teams are LAZY. It infuriates me. I want to take a cat o’ nine tails and scourge my captains for dereliction of duty. No other unit in the game behaves this way, and while it could be argued that the treb does not fire on enemy units (other than other trebs) because it could lead to the enemy parading a cavalry back and forth drawing defensive treb fire, while the offensive treb sets up, that kind of thinking and wit aught to be rewarded. Not discarded.
Everywhere else in the game, auto attacks are used, and they are used to save the player on apm, which is a highly limited resource late game. If the trebuchet must be given standby targeting orders, then give the trebuchet a set of toggles as stances. It has alot of empty space there. Simply give it a targeting filter. Auto attack everything, vs only auto atack seige and ships, vs only auto attack other trebs.
But no. The devs made it so the that the treb must be ####### to attack, and this… this is pure laziness on the trebuchet teams part, and its bad game design and it deserves to be rightly lampooned for folly.
its actually more frustrating to take trebuchets off of units its hard to hit against rather than buildings and other trebuchets.
just think of what enemy can do with a single cavalry patrolling infront of your 10+ trebuchets while they all try to “auto attack” then bring in their own trebs to wipe you out
this is a non-issue, its designed that way for a reason

Trebuchet’s purpose is to attack buildings, not units. So they should auto-attack buildings and maybe enemy trebs at most, but not other units unless you specifically target fire them.

If that is the purpose, then make them have a 100% to miss individual units. But it’s not since with enough trebs, you can hit enemy archers.
before you reach a conclusion or solution of your own, think of what possible consequences/result it’ll have if its into play then u’ll realize if there are issue that come with it

Imagine Britons Warwolf trebs aimed at choke points on Black Forest. It would be so broken if they auto-attacked units. It’s the same reason why Spanish Supremacy villagers with Sappers don’t auto-attack.

If Skirmishers have no option to only attack Archer range units/Pikmen then Trebuchets probably also should not have this luxory.
Units =/= Buildings. So different logics leads their behaviours.
I cannot believe this complaint is being made in this direction with the Trebuchet and not being made in the exact opposite direction with the Bombard Cannon. The fact that trebs aren’t distracted by any passing unit and instead does it’s job without you needing to babysit it is a feature to be cherished.

Oh, maybe that’s the reason why Houfnice has been nerfed like 5 times already 
And trebs are OP by intention, btw. They are designed to erase bases from safe distance in no time. BBCs are just the cherry on top of that sweetcake.
theres always casual players that wants the game in super easy mode 11
sadly it’ll likely ruin the game because they dont really think outside of their “inconvenience” or their “preference”.
