Basic advancing strategies for each major god

I want to share something I’ve been working on because I haven’t been able to find anyone else doing this. I have been analyzing each major god for their focuses and bonuses and which of their available minor gods best lean into and reinforce those bonuses. These are my go-to strategies for each god. Obviously, strategy must vary depending on what kind of game you’re playing or what map you play on, but it’s a good quick reference to aid in decision-making.

I list them by civilization, summarizing each major god’s characteristics and which minor gods are generally the best fit as you advance through the game.

ATLANTEAN

Kronos: myth units and siege
Leto (myth)-Rheia (myth)-Helios (siege)

Oranos: vision and mobility
Oceanus (mobility)-Theia (mobility)-Hekate (mobility)

Gaia: economy and buildings with healing bonus
Oceanus (healing)-Rheia (eco and healing)-Hekate (healing)

EGYPTIAN

Ra: cavalry and empowerment with farm boost god power
Bast (farm)-Sobek (cav)-Osiris (cav)

Isis: technology with healing and eco bonuses for gold and favor
Anubis (favor)-Nephthys (healing and eco)-Thoth (eco)

Set: barracks units
Ptah (barracks)-Sekhmet (slingers)-Horus (infantry)

GREEK

Zeus: infantry and heroes with a favor bonus to help mass myth units
Athena (infantry)-Dionysus (general boost)-Hera (myth and myrmidons)

Poseidon: cavalry and economy
Hermes (cav)-Aphrodite (eco)-Hephaestus (cav and eco)

Hades: archers and buildings
Ares (archers)-Apollo (archers)-Artemis (archers)

NORSE

Thor: dwarves and armory
Forseti (armory)-Skadi (gather)-Baldr (dwarves)

Odin: cavalry and heroes
Freyja (cav and heroes)-Njord (cav)-Baldr (cav)

Loki: myth units
Heimdal (myth),-Bragi (myth)-Hel (myth)

Freyr: defense and tech
Ullr (hill fort)-Aegir (hill fort)-Hel (giants)

As I said, this is just a basic guideline, and other strategies are also very effective, but I find these generally work well. I am open to constructive criticism and would like to hear what your go-to strategies are for each god.

This post highlights why Ra has such a terrible win rate, people see a cav bonus on a god that does cav very well and immediately asume that it must be the way to go, without pausing to read what that bonus even is.

Also Baldr (dwarves)? Like Baldr is good for lots of things but dwarves just because he buffs your rams and that upgrade mentions dwarves in it or is it because Ragnarok turns your dwarves into units?

The ragnarok thing. I had a hard time figuring out Thor because there aren’t really any minor gods that lean into his bonuses. Baldr is over all a strong god but perhaps Tyr would be better? He does benefit berserks which your free armory dwarves can be converted into.

I did read all the bonuses. I put a lot of thought into each choice here. The bonus in question is for cavalry hitpoints which both Sobek and Osiris boost. In any case, they both have strong myth units and god powers that make them good choices in any game. I encourage you to disagree but keep please your criticism constructive. What is your reccomended Ra strategy?

Right now the best strategy for playing Ra in my opinion is to straight up ignore 90% of the text on the god and play him as a discount Set. Ptah into slingers into Sekhmet slingers should end the game, particularly against Norse and Atlanteans, if the game goes long there is also Horus, giving the build some longevity. Going ptah also means you may actually get some value out of your godpower.

If you can afford to actually go Migdol units for whatever reason, maybe you got a lot of damage done with Sphinx from Bast or are looking to transition out of barraks units you still probably wanna go Sekhmet for bone bow or what its called. This upgrade lets your chariots siege fortress buildings while out ranging them, but more importantly it means you can dictate those late game exchanges.

For Mythic you have to go Osiris, unless in the scenario above. His camel upgrade is amazing and the mummy is great to counter anti archer units, however it is the the two extra pharohs who are most crucial as without them you will find yourselv severly lacking in terms of hero damage against thos big myth units. A fact demonstrated in the most recent match of Mista vs Recon 3rd game of the finale where Ra was utterly unable to do any damage to the approaching rock giants with them simply outhealing the pitiful dps of none Nephtys priests, which Ra does not have access to.

Anyway I see so many Ra’s go Bast and lose, same with them going Ptah for only the farms upgrade. That being said both are completly viable. Even when I say play Ra as a discount Set its not entirely true, for Ra can utilize the cheaper farms far better than Set can. You mention Anubis for Isis because of favor, but you could pick Bast for the same reason, eclypse and AoE empoweremnt go hard and allows Ra to build a nice bank of favor. With Isis you wanna go Bast and Nepthys nearly 90% of the time for that eclipse ancestors combo. I worry your basic advance strategies is gonna fool newer players into thinking there is only one route, when as I hoped to show there are multiple, both heroic option boost different aspects of Ras late game etc.

I did say there were multiple good options and it really depends on what kind of game you’re playing.

Pretty sure bast has better synergy with the rest of isis picks though. Anubis is situational at best.
