Basil II, Byzantine Campaign, Age of Empire II

Ok, I think I get what you say, I was having hard time to fix rough edges on terrain and didn’t think there is a solution. Apparently I was wrong. I will check what you said and try it out. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

No worries. Just as an example, terrain layering lets you do stuff like this:

Huge difference. Must check it out before making more scenarios.

Guys the Byzantine Campaign I was working on is ready, at least the first mission, you can find it here if interested, any feedback is more than welcome!

I am all for it. The official Byzantine campaign is so poorly done that it barely has a plot. There’s a whole bunch of heroes and villains, half of which are fictional, and it’s impossible to figure it out unless you write down the retelling on paper. This campaign was one of the first for me to complete back in the days, and I couldn’t believe my eyes that such a vague story could be told about one of the greatest civilizations.

If you really create a complete working civilization of Byzantium with a real emperor and real opponents, then I fully support you and wish you to be included in the official content.

I appreciate your kind words mate, thank you so much!
You know, same happened with me, when I played the official Byzantine campaign, I felt kind of disappointed. Not for the campaign itself, I mean the scenarios were really nice and fun to play, but for the fictional characters. I mean there are so many cool characters from the Byzantine history you can chose from. So I said to myself, why not make a custom campaign?
I am glad that you liked and trust me, it’s the first mission, I didn’t want it to be too ‘‘special’’. The next missions are way better. The second mission(which is almost complete) is when Basil returns to Constantinople only to find 2 usurpers trying to claim the throne for themselves. And you, as Basil, have to besiege Constantinople and at the same time convince the Rus to aid you with the Varangian Guard.
And the third mission will be about the Fatimid Arab Caliphate and the Arab-Byzantine wars.
Five missions will be in total, I hope you like them too, thanks again!

Having Rus here makes it even more interesting.
Is this all historically accurate?

Yes, it’s the first time that the Byzantines deployed the Varangian Guard and the reason why, Russians are nowadays Orthodox.

In 988, Basil II requested military assistance from Vladimir I of Kiev to help defend his throne. In compliance with the treaty made by his father after the Siege of Dorostolon, Vladimir sent 6,000 men to Basil. Vladimir took the opportunity to rid himself of his most unruly warriors which in any case he was unable to pay. This is the presumptive date for the formal, permanent institution of an elite guard. In exchange for the warriors, Vladimir was given Basil’s sister, Anna, in marriage. Vladimir also agreed to convert to Christianity and to bring his people into the Christian.

All the above info, is included as objectives in the second scenario(90% ready)

That is the coolest story ever told. Can you make there 1 mission for Rus?

If there is enough interest of the campaigns in progress, I would definitely do one for Rus.
For now, the Varangian Rus will be trainable units in Basil from mission 2 to 5.
