Battle Horn/Bell Sound (poll)

“I really enjoy the highly frequent and loud battle horn sound (battle bell, if you have classic sounds mod enabled), especially when it’s non-stop due to big armies doing damage all over:”

It’s supposed to be alarming. If it wasn’t, you would underestimate the level of danger and underreact.

Instead, for me it is annoying. I don’t need the constant reminder. I have a pretty good memory in that I can remember pretty well that I was attacked two seconds ago and the enemy could still be attacking me two seconds later. I don’t personally need a reminder every two seconds for five or ten minutes.

If I’m not reminded every two seconds is the fear that I’m going to get distracted and forget? (“Oh, look! A butterfly!”)

There are other ways the sense of ‘alarm’ could be communicated to us that are less annoying, too.

The thing is you do need the alarm because otherwise you will assume you’re only being attacked in one place. Whereas often times your opponent is only attacking you first with a small army as a distraction while they attack somewhere else on the map. Meanwhile you might not notice the 2nd attack and fail to garrison and lose a ton of villagers.

True, but you should be paying attention to your empire/domain better as it is, in general. Especially after hearing the battle sound at least one time. In my opinion.

Like, seriously, if you were to only hear the sound once per minute, for example, you’re saying you/players would put your guard completely down, not pay attention to your empire, in general, your boundaries/perimeter, your domain, and flares on the mini-map, and have no clue if the enemy attacked you unless you hear the battle sound at seconds 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 22, 23, 28, 33, 38, 45, 47, 50, 53, 54, 57, and 60 after that first sound, too?

I contend the player should pay more attention to their domain. And it goes both ways: your enemy would have to do the same for their domain. So the only one who has an advantage is, arguably, the better player. Which is what ELO is all about, no?

But, even if we were to be alerted every two seconds, there are some other, far less annoying ways to communicate this info that I’d prefer. For example:

  • Just use the one loud annoying alarm no more than once every two or three minutes, and use a very minor/subtler/softer more pleasant-sounding alert for the in-between seconds. The same info would be communicated, just not as annoyingly
    • I shouldn’t have to turn the audio of the game down and crank the music just to drown out the battle alarm sounds
  • And add some visual cues in the viewport and/or better (more noticeable) ones on the mini-map.
    • Which could/should, ideally, be done for accessibility reasons anyways

There are several ways to communicate enemy incursions than just the same old loud sound once every two seconds, imo.
