Good summary of some of the issues currently with the game.
I technically wouldn’t say age four god powers are broken; they’re supposed to be strong. They also cost a lot to reuse.
Some of them are definitely too strong. Others not so much. The fact that you can reuse makes the overpowered ones even stronger.
Well, ragnarok, meteor and lightning storm are definitely broken, but most others are fine.
Inferno is actually even more broken than ones you listed. If you stack up your army too much it can definitely wipe out the whole army. I had a moment when my 250 pops worth of units were wiped out by a single Inferno
Agree with GPs being too OP. They were intended to be used only once before but now…
Every civ has GPs, so it’s not as broken as you think. Not only that, but most post-classical GPs are too expensive to use again repeatedly. Many can also be avoided (for example, bronze, restoration, and lightning storm) and although they’re powerful, they don’t always decide the game. If your opponent isn’t careful, he could lose his first Son of Osiris.
Mythic god powers are meant to be game-ending. The whole point of a massive chunk of the major techs and powers of that age are to give you the edge to end the game right there.
Game ending or atleast dealing significant damage. That’s why I like AoM retold so much atm. There’s no super long and tiresome stalemate situations. Games can shift quickly and are dynamic. Devs have to balance the game out in the future for sure but I prefer to deal with fighting something that seems OP with another thing that seems OP as well.
I agree with the above few. I don’t like the rhetoric of “something is strong ergo it’s broken”. These GP’s are meant to be strong. Nor are they broken. First, they only decide matches if the opponent doesn’t plan for them. Second, EVERY civ has a couple of powerful GP’s in each age. If only the Greeks for example got a powerful mythic power like lightning then yes, it’s unfair. But while a Greek can decimate an army with Storm, they in turn can be decimated by meteor, or implode, or have to face off a ragnorak or the SoO.
This is age of mythology where the gods intervene in our wars. Let them!
The thing is, they can balance this by making the stronger ones cost more to reuse.
It’s also balanced by myth units and upgrades. A god with a more powerful GP could have weaker MU and not very useful techs. Or you could have a weak GP but really powerful MU and upgrades.
I’m not saying the game is well balanced like this currently. Merely that there are multiple complex ways the game can be balanced even if one option appears very strong.
Exactly. Leto is a terrible minor goddess to go through at the moment. A terrible god power and underwhelming automata, while Thoth is nearly unstoppable (meteor, phoenix, AND valley of kings tech).
Automatons aren’t terrible if massed. But spiders lair is underwhelming. If it ate myth then it would be a great defence GP like Carnivora is now
Spider’s Lair has been directly nerfed. It now only creates 3 eggs in a line instead of 5-6 in an area. I’m not sure if that was nerfed in EE or for Retold, but it’s significantly weaker now.
It is incredibly cheap to cast again though.
No, but you mustn’t let your opponent see that you’re training them, so to get a large mass, you’d need plenty of temples to hide them in (maybe making oracles at the same time to confuse the enemy).
Well they’ll know you could be massing them by dint of advancing through Leto so…
Leto is a terrible minor goddess
Wait, she is? I really like automatons, even if I don’t much care for Spider Lair.
It’s very cheap, yes. But it’s more expensive than Valor, despite Valor being generally regarded as a much better GP…
I tried using automata the other day against the ai, and lost a lot to a couple of heroes.
