Hello everyone. This is my first post I am making in this forum. I am a fan of the first aoe1 like all of you and have spent hours and hours playing through campaigns, scenarios and multiplayer games. I currently play the first edition of the game (rise of rome) + upatch version 1.2. I know that there are ways to play multiplayer via various external sites or clients but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet (maybe I will make another topic in which I will talk about it).
My question is addressed to all of you and is as follows: in which “platform” to play aoe1? The 98’ version? In Age of empires definitive edition or Return of Rome? Each version of these have their pros and cons and i would like to learn more about them.
I currently own in addition to the classic version also the definitive edition but on the microsoft store (unfortunately). I do not play this version because of a strong sense of disappointment.
Let me explain: this version had a huge potential but it was all wasted, from paltry additions like farm rebuild and attack move, very few improvements like pathfinding, absence of a mod manager, absence of features like gates, land trade and so many other additions that could have been made to improve the game and the quality life, and not to mention so many technical instabilities.
The experience with this version of the game was not the best and I still hope in vain that there will come updates for this game. So I went back to playing the first edition of the game and wanted to know if it was convenient to switch to return of rome or stay in the first edition community (e.g., on aoe heaven) or explore new possibilities
That’s all, I want to be more involved in this community and in this game that is deeply close to my heart and I apologize in advance if my English is not the best.
Happy battles to all!
I dont know any client to suggest you, but you could vote on GOG Dreamlist (https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/age-of-empires) to push WE to make a partnership with GOG. MAYBE this version could have multiplayer. At least you would have a forum on GOG to look for people playing the same game version as you, as most here play only the DE versions of the series.

I think Return of Rome is nice, but I’m an AoE II player, and admittedly it’s expensive to get AoE II and a DLC just to play AoE I. Moreover the multilayer RoR is dead, but… it’s still the best version to me. Nice new campaigns, updated civs and units, better pathing…
Of you want, try to post in the AoE II forum?
