Best UU

I believe you’re the only one saying that.

Probably everyone voted it because Cataphract has no real hard counter when in decent groups, except maybe cav archers: in high number they even beat paladins.
In my opinion it’s a nice unit, but no way it’s a top 2 and for me not even top 5.

I don’t hate it, actually.
The thing is that cataphract just fits the civ so well. Like the huskarl just fits goths perfectly.
We never specified if the units should be strong on their own or just work out perfectly with the civ.

So I think voting for catas isn’t the dumbest thing you could do, it’s just a different understanding of the question.

Many players do not know how to counter cataphracts. They assume archers will be mediocre since it’s heavy cavalry, nor do they want to fight fire with fire with bruteforce cavalry (an option that plays into the byzantine cheaper halbs). Halberdiers are decent if you can keep them long enough to actually kill them, otherwise the cataphracts will just live to fight another day. And monks are only a realistic option in small numbers. Some civs like the Aztecs or Goths that are extremely reliant on their infantry will have a really bad day if a Byzantine player produces enough cataphracts.

As for leiciai, true they are a glass cannon compared to the paladin but if you get 2 relics they then become extremely sneaky, dealing a total of 20 damage which means 1 fewer hit to kill most units, most having a number of hitpoints that’s a multiplier of 20. They are more useful against the enemy army, than to devastate their town (though they are also nasty against villagers).

War elephants really need cover to protect them against halbs and monks.

Hussite Wagons require more babysitting. They die to every melee unique unit, so they require spears in front and/or ranged units behind. They also die to Mangonels or Bombard Cannons, forcing either Light Cav or your own cannons. War Wagons can easily chase down enemy siege, hit-and-run infantry, and somewhat escape cavalry or bring it back to their castle.

Leiciai yes they can be very deadly but is really hard to field them because of the high food cost (means can’t be massed since Castleage)and slower TT

I think even coustilier are actually better than leitis. Coustilier just have the harder snowball and leitis can still be stopped by mass pikes even if you can’t field as much. Coustilier are basically unstoppable once they have superior numbers.

I think just in general, war wagon is the more rounded unit. Hussite wagons are too much specialised in countering archers and have even lower dps/ investment than the war wagons. War wagons already on the lower end of healthy dps / investment. You see it with EA, tbh one of the strongest units in the game - in theory. But they have so low dps, what gives the opponen just so much time to react. And with hussite wagons it’s somewhat similar. They are tanks, but they miss the damage output to be top tier UU.

yeah 16 + 6 my error

Mangudai is overrated. In Castle Age, Camel Archer is better than Mangudai in terms of cost (it is 8% cheaper) + more attack. In late imperial, Mangudai become better but 80% of the game finishes before Late Imperial. My vote on Keshik. It is better version of Paladin and has no weakness. Conq for instance best unit in Castle Age but Mid Imperial, it become trash. Therefore, I chose Keshik.

But it feels so good when you micro 60 Mangudais

Totally agree, but it’s so hard, basically impossible to make a clean transition.
That’s why I think that other UUs are currently almost at the same level as the conq as you can actually make builds to directly transition into them in early castle.

Kamayuks are the best, sure Mangudais may be OP but do they carry a very long pointy stick? No.

Coustilier is also really strong tho

Well any heavy cavalry unit is strong when the enemy only has castle age pikemen in unsufficient numbers

Ok Poles might need a nerf, look how insane the Obuch is in Arena:

Obuch flood, plus 30G cavaliers that were able to drown Elite Leitis to death is stupid lol
I don’t think 12s TT will be enough of a nerf.

Didn’t you notice those Leiciai? They chew through all melee units.

In my opinion UU can be evaluated entirely separately as non-elite and elite. The upcoming buff for infantry UU will minimize the gap. Nevertheless, we can’t say the same things for Janissaries or Conquistadors. While they are very good at castle age and big probably within Top5, they are most probably within Bottom5 when it comes to the elite upgrades.

Leitis is one of melee unit that can actually beat Obuch in melee but Poles follwark eco + Obuch creation time stomped Lithuanians in match you showed. Cataphract, Samurai and Jaguar also beat Obuch but these units are already direct counters and they are unique units.

Right now, only HC + Halberdier or Hussar combo is viable against Obuch + Arbalest combo but Poles also has Winged Hussar which stomp Hand Cannoneers.

Now, Poles is countered by only Cavalry Archer civilizations (especially by Mayans (Plumed Archer is kind of cav archer and enough to destroy Poles. Poles has no answer against Plumes. Poles skirmisher, Obuch and Winged Hussar all of them die to Plumes) Mongols (simply Mangudai), and Berbers (Camel Archer)). Arbalest looks promising but Poles still have Skirmisher and Obuch also can fight against Arbalest due to its cheapness. Arbalest player will call gg after gold run out. Mongols, Mayans and Berbers is nemesis of Poles now. Weirdly, Poles has no answer against these 3 civilization.

Edit: When I saw 30 Obuch fought against Leitis, I assumed that Obuch pile to Lithuanians until Leitis creation time or gold cost can’t catch up Obuch creation time and its cheapness but Poles side stopped to create Obuch and transition into Cavalier. It was very wrong tactic. Cavalier isn’t better than Obuch in terms of melee fight and Obuch is actually more cost efficient than Poles 30 gold Cavalier even. Lith also did have zero relics which is another disadvantage for Lith side. In more equal match up, Poles side should transition into Arbalest in order to beat Leitis. Leitis seems hold Obuch alone. Obuch need Arbalest to beat Leitis. That is my inference from this game.

I think against leitis the winged hussars can work aswell. But it’s no easy task for sure.
TBH leitis are somewhat OP and most civs can only deal with them via mass halbs. The few top arb and cav archer civs can use them, but in these matchups the lith player wouldn’t go for leitis in the first place.

As Poles lack halb, their last bet is actually the arb. But I think obuch, 30 g cavalier or the winged hussars can possibly give an equal fight on their own. They are just no “counters” in the term that a transition into one of them can work because of the timing disadvantage.

(Edit, just tested it. Even with the folwark bonus the Polish units can’t give the leitis an equal fight. Seems like indeed obuch + arb (or monks) is the only way poles can deal with that unit. (But a lot of civs have problems against leitis actually, the weakness isn’t restricted to poles. The unit is just busted.)

I think Obuch should be 65 food 25 gold and -2/0 armor reduction instead of current -1/-1. In this way, Obuch will be good combo with Winged Hussar as it planned before. -1 melee armor is underpowered and -1 Pierce Armor is Overpowered. This change will fix this problem as well. Also Poles should have last archer upgrade in order to resist against Archer Civs. Poles early game is very weak. Scout-line 10% faster also solve this problem. Decreasing -60% gold (30 gold) Knights to -40% gold (45 gold) but giving Paladin to Poles also would be good change.
