Black screen and Freezes

Issue:

My game crashes in two different ways.

  • First one is when the game freeze for a short moment and then every program I was opening turns black. Everything recovered, but only AOE2:DE stays black. Audio plays, I can still make units with hotkeys and mouse cursor but there’s nothing to see. The only solution is to quit and restart the game. I don’t know what causes this, but I suspect that the GPU driver crashed.
  • Second one is when my PC completely hangs itself. The only audio I can hear is the static noise. There’s nothing to do but force shutdown the PC and turning it back on.

I got the latest drivers, do frequent file verification on Steam. Nothing helps. My specs:
Ryzen 5 3600 no OC
16GB DDR4@3000
GTX 1070Ti

I have similar issue.

Several seconds after launching the screen goes black (monitors go to power saving/turn off), sound keeps playing (AOE sound, Spotify if it was playing in background keeps playing) but keyboard is dead (cannot change Caps/Num Lock, alt+ctrl+del doesn’t work) and only way to recover is hard reboot. The sound stops playing after about a minute or two.
I found nothing in event log about driver crash or similar.

The only other case of freeze like this happened while I was writing this, I started HWInfo64 to check my DDR frequency. It froze/crashed exactly the same (screens off, youtube continued to play on sound card). I managed to find AMD driver crash in logs: Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I think my issue is related to AMD driver (the 2020 Adrenalin 20.1.4). I will try updating it, seems there is 20.2.1 available.

Same for me with the Nvidia RTX 2070 16 GB RAM
So far i found out in my event log that the problem is caused by nvlddmkm.sys. Tried everything there is to find on google, but nothing worked. If i check my system performance my GPU crashes and then the game closes. Only happens when i play aoe2DE. I can play LoL Overwatch BF1 etc…

It always happens post castle age. You guys got the same problem?

I am having the same issues. Did anyone find a solution?

Same issue here. Game crashes to desktop and have done so since release. In the mean time I have upgraded the motherboard and reinstalled Windows 10. Issue persists.

Ryzen 3700X
32GB DDR4 @3200 and @3600, both crashes
GTX 1080TI

Tried with and without UHD pack. Lowest and high settings. Crashes to desktop without any error.

Got the same problem here… It seems to start happening after I upgraded my windows to https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4549951/windows-10-update-kb4549951

I reverted this update and it worked for me.

Same issue. Newly built computer, above minimum specs.

CPU: i5 4570
GPU:Rex 460 4GB
M/B: ASUS H81m-e
SSD: 128GB
PSU:400w bronze
Ram: 8GB DDR 1600

Get about 15/20 minutes In. Black screen and buzzing from the speaker. No way to get out but hard reset.
