It would be great to have an option to adjust the size of blood pools.
-
It would also be helpful if the position of blood pools could be adjusted to appear where the unit falls, instead of where it was standing.
-
I hope units that die in shallow water can have the same or similar visual effects as those in the Extended Edition version.
There is a option to have a effect on the size of the blood pools
An option to make the blood darker would be nice too.
Sorry, but that option only changes the transparency. What I’m looking for is a darker tone and a reduced size for blood pools.
In comparison, the Age of Mythology: Extended Edition version had more refined visual effects, including blood appearing in shallow water. Currently, in Blood and Bones, there is no visible effect when units die in shallow water, which is a bit disappointing.
Okay, I’ve only been playing with the Blood and Bones pack for less than an hour and I already know I’m pretty disappointed. I have also identified several issue/ improvements. I’m trying to make these feedback constructive, since I feel a lot of these issues could be addressed if the Dev’s took some time to polish this feature.
What I like:
- The high level of customisation options, great to see that people can choose the effects they want rather than a generic on/ off.
- The blood effects have some positives. They are more dynamic than I imagined and each unit produced a unique effect.
What needs fixing:
- First and foremost: the corpses and skeletons! To me this is the most frustrating thing. For years people have asked for the decay visuals to be returned liked they were in the original game, and here we are: the original game’s way of handling unit decay is far superior and reads so much better. The original game had unique corpses for each and every unit! This has generic skeletons and doesn’t show decay. Below are constructive feedback to fix this disappointment.
- Each unit should have its own unique skeleton. You really should have started with this in base game, as now there are so many more units adding them will be a challenge. If you added them at the start they could have been made at the same time as modelling. Some units have bones that don’t even match what they are. Deer leave horse skeletons and some myth units leaves a generic pile bones that they are unlikely to have in their body. It looks pretty lazy and is not immersive.
- The majority of skeletons that do fit their corpse (mostly human) don’t match the pose correctly. In addition, some of the skeletons spawn as a mirror image instead of under the corpse.
- Cavalry only leave behind a horse skeleton, no human.
- The corpses should not sink into the ground. Instead they should slowly fade to bones. The fade effect in the game needs an overhaul. It should be a fluid transition of transparency, not a pixelated effect. This is how the original AoM achieved the look of a corpse slowly rotting.
- The skeleton needs to remain bloody for only a few moments, before fading to clean white/ yellow/ brown.
- After several moments the bones should sink into the ground.
- Some of the myth units prismatic blood doesn’t really match what you’d imagine. I feel the majority of humanoid myth units would have red blood. For example, what’s the rational for Caldaria having rainbow blood?
- The prismatic blood pool colour from myth units doesn’t match the bloody body look. For example, argus has a red bloodied body, but leaves yellow blood (wouldn’t it be green?)
- Many have mentioned this already: the red colour is off. It also doesn’t look wet enough.
Thanks for considering this feedback. I am hoping some of it is taken on board, and this feature isn’t set in stone. This is another reason why I’m calling for open betas. Another example of why letting the community give feedback can strengthen the content at release. As it currently stands I’m unlikely to use this feature at all. It isn’t immersive and the original game did it (with major technological disadvanatges) much better.
No man, Sincerely it looks like shit.
Just like Wine Stains on cloth
How is this shit live on the game? ![]()

And even worse. This has suppoosed to be on the very release and available for all players, but not you have to pay for it.
No man. Simply half-baked work
I agree with you and am feeling pretty frustrated, despite expecting to be disappointed. The only solace I’m taking is they are clearly listening to fans (or at least streamers), so hopefully they fix this. But I’m also trying to be measured and constructive.
But yes, this really isn’t better than what we had, it’s worse. And their original mantra is ‘the game you imagined in your head as a kid’. This effect isn’t it ![]()
Seeing more in detail units loose and eye or get injuries, really looking fun.
The diversity in blood colors for MU is also very good
I think there should be a slider to adjust the color of the bones. The option to make the bones clearer and whiter would help. And of course the decaying process as well.
I don’t own the pack yet, but from what I’ve seen, the pack is better than what’s expected. The best thing is that there are many options to tune, especially the size of the blood pool.
My main complaint is that, when the unit dies, it just sinks into ground and then suddenly becomes skeletons. I still think OG AoM did this better in with a (two-step?) decay process, and most myth units (if not all) have unique corpses so it was easier to tell which unit died. But I understand introducing unique corpse for each unit can be a huge workload and thus out of their budget.
i would be already happy if about half of the things you are mentioning are getting looked at.
especially for me these things for example:No1,No2, No3, No7, No8 (but maybe thats already adjustable?), No9, No10 i have to partly agree with too.
i see the blood and bones dlc as a painting: the artist (the devs) draw some rough image on the canvas (their game) and now they have to add details and other things to it. this might take time but as long as it will get in shape and the painting will get finished its okay. art is allowed to take time.
(also as really cool and kind the adjustments for blood are it could be a bit odd if some players rock rainbow blood all over the place, others only blood red, others milky white and others none. wouldn’t visual clarity/readability suffer like this?)
I’ll echo some of the others here. We need more skeleton variations, ideally each unit would have it’s own skeleton but I would settle for groups. Cav, infantry and heroes. My personal exception is myth units. Since this game is about mythology every myth unit should have its own skeleton (especially Titans).
I guess I am in the minority on this one but whenever the battles are happening I don’t really mind the blood. With the current options to adjust it works for me. I will say that I wish the myth units blood fit them better. I need to do more testing to see what the correlation is. Also heroes should maybe have golden blood maybe (up for suggestions on this one) to make them stand out more.
I think it needs work but I am happy with the settings to adjust duration and number of blood and skeletons. I really like the options to adjust it to my liking. Overall it needs some more work but the bones are there for something great.
I hope that at some point the devs, or the modding community, add a way to customize each unit’s blood color. It’s a cool detail to have, but everyone will have very different opinions about which units should have which different types of blood.
I remember in OG the Norse battle boars turned into machine parts and gears when died, which was quite impressive. How did they handle this in Retold?
All i want is Unique skeletons for myth units like the original game
Yes, I loved that! Good question. I’ll have a look now.
Okay, so metal MUs like Colossus (which to be fair never decayed in the original) and Battle Boar leave NOTHING behind ![]()
At the very least, Titans should have their own unique skeletons; given their enormous size, using large human skeletons looks very strange. Another major problem is that the color of the blood pools seems to be randomly assigned to different units, not matching the units themselves. Furthermore, all units’ battle damage status is displayed as red bloodstains, which also looks strange.
Yes, it’s more cost-effective to buy the expansion pass, so you don’t feel ripped off with the Blood and Bones pack…
Yep, it’s really lazy. I don’t get how the original, a 24 year old game, can be better at this. Each unit (including animals) had a unique corpse and skeleton.
