I think there it would be great to have a unique Italian priest for sure. The German/Russian priest model looks more protestant and might be more suitable for Sweden and the Dutch as well. Honestly I’d almost use the British/French priest model for the Germans over the Dutch.
Not sure about going any further than that. Feels a bit over the top to have an Anglican bishop for the English and not suitable to use Catholic clergy for protestant states (no bishops for Sweden or the Dutch).

Sweden always had bishops. In Sweden the entire church hierarchy converted to Lutheranism so they retained bishops there.

Meh, Euro priest skins are not particularly a big problem.

I think, however if you twinned the skins as an update linked to a civ-bespoke Priest HC shipment (which are thin-on the ground anyway), that would be fun. There’s a unique church card for all euros which gives some unique-to-civ however they aren’t really anything to do with their church/religion or the actual Priest unit itself. There’s probably plenty of interesting quirks you can associate with each civ’s priests.

Malignant Priests [British]
British priests can train Clubmen - melee milita units armed with cudgels, flails and sickles. Like typical Miltiamen, their HP depletes however not when near a Priest!

During the English Civil War local villages and towns formed vigilante bands called the Clubmen who tried to protect local areas from both sides in the civil war - effectively as another faction. They were often roused and stirred into taking action by the local priests (called 'Malignant Priests by Parliament), identified themselves with white ribbands and armed themselves with agricultural equipment.

Compared to the current trend of “shared units gaining unique looks via techs/cards”, I’d prefer them looking unique by default, like the church.

Yeah, that’s fair.

  • Settler appearance is via Euro region (or it’s unique unit)
  • Building aesthetics is via Euro region (or it’s unique buidling)
  • Church is unique to Euro civ itself (though there’s a few nip and tucks required there - Maltese & British off the top of my head)
  • Priest appearenace is unique for Spanish (Unique Unit), Ports, Ottoman (unique look and name, but the same) & Russia, but generic (almost Friar Tuck - monk!) for British, Dutch, French, Italians, Maltese and Swedes.

Considering there’s just one actual Unique Unit with different stats there for the priests, there’s quite a few that despite being typical healers, have unique skins!

In conclusion it does seem more fitting that they all have a unique appearance, really for the sake of keeping the Euro’s more aesthetically balanced - bespoke civ church model/textures + bespoke healer model/textures.

Clerical clothing generally isn’t something that varies on a national basis. Most of these countries would have priests wearing more or less the exact same vestments. The variation you’re showing is mostly different positions in a hierarchy or different seasonal colours and liturgical uses.

I think there’s room for improvement, but it is more based on denomination than nationally (with a few exceptions).

The default priest is a friar and therefore only really appropriate for Catholic countries. So Sweden, Britain, and Netherlands probably shouldn’t have this skin after age 1.

The Portuguese one looks to be a Jesuit with a galero which is accurate enough and Italy could probably share this style too. Personally I think Ports should share the Missionary unit with Spain (and it should have the conversion ability).

The “Eastern” priest doesn’t look like anything I’m aware of and doesn’t really seem appropriate for either the Russians or Germans.

Changes:

Orthodox priests (Russians, Romania revolt, etc) should have a simple black cassock. This model should also have a big beard since facial hair is strongly encouraged for Orthodox clergy.

Reformed priests (Dutch and maybe British) should have a Geneva Gown:

Lutheran and Anglican priests (Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Finish revolution, etc) don’t really have super distinctive clothing. Most commonly they’d be dressed with an alb or surplice and stole (which is also pretty standard for Catholics).

There are a couple exceptions for Britain and Denmark though. Anglicans (Britain) have a unique Canterbury Cap unique to them (although I doubt it’s common).

And Danish Lutheran priests apparently wear a ruff.

I think this could be a skin for all European civs in Age 1. Later they could be tailored to appropriate Christian denominations and regions.

Russia would be the exception since they were never Roman Catholic so it wouldn’t fit.

Looking into it more, it looks like some sort of pulpit gown would work for most of the Protestant countries.

Swedish priests apparently wore this:

In Britain, Anglicans, Methodist, and Presbyterians often wore something like this:

All the current German religious references are Roman Catholic so they could maybe keep the friar skin. Or maybe switch to the Protestant skin in age 2 and revert back to the friar if their church card is sent. There could also be some kind of Hanseatic themed card that gives them the Danish skin since some Hanseatic cities also used the ruff.

In addition to some skin updates, I’d also like to see some new and improved unique healers.

  1. Missionaries should have the conversion ability and should be available to both Portugal and Spain.

  2. A Preacher which functions as a Protestant equivalent to the Missionary. It could look like the Protestant priest skin but mounted on a horse (like circuit preachers). These units could be available to America and Britain via a Great Awakening card. I think it’s really dumb that USA doesn’t have a religious healer.

  3. A Cardinal hero unit for some Catholic countries like France and Italy. There were figures like Cardinal Richelieu and Rodrigo Borgia who wielded immense secular power. I think enabling this via a Cardinal politician would be the best approach and it could replace the Pope politician for Italy.

Yeah that looks about right.

It would most certainly be nice if the Swedes weren’t using the same Preist model as that of the British, Dutch, French, and United States. Also, the model currently used by the Portuguese should also be given to other civs that use the Mediterranean building set (with the exception of the Ottomans of course).

What seems quite strange is that classically Protestant civilizations, such as the Dutch, in this period, had Catholic friars as priests. It is completely inaccurate, being that there is a more Protestant-like texture to the Germans. I don’t understand the reason for keeping the friar for the Dutch.
