Buckrider card now beyond useless with the 500c upfront cost, please fix before patch. Ideas welcome

While I understood the worries about the earlier buckrider card without the 500c upfront cost, as it stands now, this card is impossible to make use of in Supremacy games and for treaty players : A 1 pop Ruyter is far better than 2 pop Highwaymen…
I think giving the Dutch more variety was a good idea, but only if its actually playable .
So how could we fix this card before patch? maybe adding a Tavern rickshaw that gives 20Pop in addition to the 3 highwaymen? maybe 150c coin cost instead 500c? Dutch lack the means of gaining fast Pop space, as wood should go on banks mostly .
Any ideas welcome, but would be sad to have a card with great ambition and great ideas not to see any play

Highwayman become 1 pop if you send the Theater card. But I agree, 500 gold is too steep a cost.

They specifically have something in place to prevent that, it can go no lower than 2 even with theaters card.

This was nerfed immediately. Which also makes buckriders worse because it’s a -1 pop only if theatres is not sent. If it is then it doesn’t reduce pop. Garbage design. If they don’t want them working together then Buckriders should make it -2 pop by itself.
.

oh, so they patched that… shame, you already needed two cards to make them viable in the first place.

They should just take the pop reduction out of the card entirely if it works like that. Just have it ship more of them or buff them more in another way instead.

Highwaymen can dismount to be a musketeer unit, so maybe there’s a way to make that mode of the unit more attractive even if the light cav mode is outclassed by Ruyters.

the dismounted version is indeed more interesting, but the price for 500c is too stepp in any serious game . I think , shipping a Tavern with 20pop would be quite okay then. Price remains steep, but you get at least more value out of it .

I don’t like that approach because Taverns that support population should be the default.

For this card specifically, the easiest solution would be to just make it cheaper or send another Highwayman.

The devs must be very gun shy about making another unit that recreates what the USA were doing with cowboys for a while. I get that, but it’s frustrating to watch because they just refuse to let an outlaw be a viable option.

The Buckriders were fine with 2 cards required to get them to be a Ruyter replacement. It was a quirk that few players would really go for since it’s hardly game changing. Further, there’s plenty of other pressure from simple opportunity cost (other high value cards that need to be sent early in Age 2) with villager cards, the bank cards, resource cards so you can get your initial banks built, unit cards, etc. Adding the 500c cost would’ve been fine if they left the 1 pop buckrider in play, but they doubled down on the nerf, made it a 2 pop unit, even after the two cards, and it’s back to being yet another useless outlaw that strategically is a noob trap.

Now here’s the real criticism. The buckrider is just a highwayman outlaw. Normally, those are a 5 POP COST unit. They’re bad options even for 2 pop cost. It only became an viable option once you knocked it down to 20% of it’s regular population cost! Why on earth do they have such an outrageously high pop cost globally if you’re ever intended to use them?

I really strongly don’t like when developers put options in a game that are poor choices. If the choice is in the game, there should be a situation where you’d want to choose it and where it is a good choice. Right now, this card is always a bad choice. That’s a noob trap and it just sets up someone who chooses it to fail.
