:play_button: GAME INFORMATION

GAME BUILD: Version 101.103.10863.0 (#141935) 17957298
GAME PLATFORM: Steam
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 10
HARDWARE: Good Samsung SSD, Xeon E3-1270 (i7 4th generation equivalent), 16gb system RAM, RX 570 8gb VRAM.

:play_button: ISSUE EXPERIENCED

Autosave freeze the game. Everytime the game autosave, AOE2 freezes.

:play_button: FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

100% of the time / matches I play (ALWAYS). This happens when playing single player modes.

:play_button: REPRODUCTION STEPS

Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Start playing on single player mode.
  2. Game autosave.
  3. Game freeze for one second.

:play_button: EXPECTED RESULT

Game freeze for about one second when autosaving.

:play_button: POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

[Solution 1] Give the players the option of turn off autosave.

[Solution 2] Give the players the option to adjust the autosave timer (if the game autosave every 5 minutes, the game will freeze avery 5 minutes. Some players may want to autosave every 15 minutes, 20 minutes, etc., so the game will freeze/stutter less often).

[Solution 3] Find why this happens and fix, however it may take a long time (I’m a developer, so I know how hard it is). The solution 1 and 2 will be great, because I think it’s possible to implement faster.

:play_button: MORE DETAILS:

There are reports about this bug since some years ago. On Steam there are people reporting this issue since a few years ago.

Here is part of my steam discussion post with more details:

This isn’t a new bug, it’s and old bug and people complaint since a few years ago. So the Solution 1 and 2 would be very nice and we would love it. This freeze when every autosave happen is really bad, and damage the gaming experience.

I think many people who like single player stop playing AOE2 because of this bug. This bug affect the single player maps.

Age of Empires 1 suffered from a similar issue when shifting from one music track to another, and it was very annoying. To have savefiles being affected with a drop in frames when created in this game, which is much more modern, is a shame and should be fixed. I ran the game with a decent CPU with a graphics card capable of performing well, but still, this issue happened to me.

Oh yes, please!

Certainly! I would like to have it set around 5 minutes of in-game time, or 2.5 minutes.

Well, it would probably be the easiest and simplest way, in my opinion, without having to add any new settings or tweaks but instead focusing on existing ones and restoring their functionality.
