Can i play age of empires 2 (2013) against Age of empires 2 Definitive Edition?

Hi there,

I currently own Age of empires 2 (2013) edition. A friend of mine wants to buy age of empires 2 Definitive Edition. But we wonder if we can play online against/with each other. If we can’t, do i have to buy the Age of empires 2 DE as well?

I cant seem to find it online if there is a real difference between the two games regarding the question if they are online compatible with eacht ohter.
