I have downloaded aoe3 definitive edition throught steam.
Is it possible to play multiplayer with my friend who has the cd-rom game (2005)?
We tried but we couldnt find each others usernames.
You absolutely can’t. Those are like totally different games at this point, with hundreds of thousands of changes (not exaggerating).
Your friend needs to get DE on Steam.

No, then they wouldn’t be able to play ranked together because crossplay is still not fully implemented.
