Can you read the count?

I can read the count there about as well as I can read lumbercamp vs mine icons, wood wall vs stone wall, wood tower vs stone tower, wood gate vs stone gate, and several other examples.
Intuitive, easy-to-read and -distinguish icons aren’t really a specialty of AoE4. A design decision to be contemporary and anachronistic with UI/UX, which means: study each icon’s graphic for a few seconds to try and figure out what it is showing before clicking because it’s simplistic and all icons are the same color… and if you’re not sure or are in a hurry to focus your attention back on the game asap, then just cross your fingers, flip a coin, and click it and deal with the consequences of a wrong click later.
In the case of your example, it’s par for the course, imo. Spend a few seconds inspecting it before knowing the actual number being displayed
