Cannot start newly-installed (from CD) AoE II Age of Kings

I am running Windows 11 on my computer. I just received the Collector’s Edition on CD and attempted to install AoE Age of Kings.

Everything seemed to be OK until I tried to run it. It gave me a message asking if I wanted to allow a file from an unknown publisher to make changes to my computer and referenced Empires2.exe. I selected YES.

Then nothing happens. It never does a thing.

I restarted. I right clicked the desktop icon, selected Properties, and selected Run Compatibility troubleshooter, set the program to run in Compatibility mode for Windows 8, and selected Run this program as an administrator.

Can someone please help me through this?

Thanks

The usual solution is to install The Conquerors (if you haven’t), and then the UserPatch, which should hopefully fix your compatibility problem.

The UserPatch has many install options, and you may choose them for a more authentic or “updated” experience.

In general, for old PC game problems, consult PC Gaming Wiki.

Thank you. I will try that

When I run the patch (setupAoC.exe), I get a dialogue box saying The Required Fields Could Not be Located. Setup will now close.

As per the instructions, I made certain that the setup file is located in the same folder as the executable that launches the game.

What additional files are required?

When I installed the game, it gave me the option of a “FULL” install or just a typical install (much smaller). I chose the typical install. Is there a chance that the missing files are int he FULL install?

You could give this one a try. It’s simply a replacement for the executable file of AoK. I’m able to run the original AoK (without Conquerors content) on Windows 10 with it (haven’t tested with 11).
