After Microsoft released the Mac version of AOE2, the emulator my friend was using stopped working because support for the game was removed, as AOE2 is now officially available on Mac.
The problem is that we can no longer play together. Does anyone know of a way to make it work again?
Buying a new emulator for around $100 is not an option, and my friend already owns AOE2 on Steam.

I am in the same situation.
Then it’s more of an hardware not meeting the minimum requirment.
And if 100$ is too much for a new emulator, then a Shadow PC isn’t your solution either.
What I’d advice is to send request to the team that made the portage, feralinteractive something like that, about your mac not able to launch their portage and requieres them to do support for your hardware.
Outside of that, it’s only ba changing the hardware that you’ll resolve the issue I fear.
Try eventually using Linux with Wine, as in installing a virtual linux on your mac to then play with the PC wine emulated version. I know it’s sounds a lot of effort but it may avoid repurchasing hardware.

No, his Mac is fine, and it launches AoE2 perfectly, but since the release of the official Mac version, the devs of the emulator he was using removed AoE2 from the emulator, so he can not play on the emulator any longer.
He can play the official one on Steam, but for some reason they did not make it cross-play, and now we can not play together.

Nah, by using a Linux on your Mac, you should be able to play to some windows game with their Wine tool. Not sure if it’s working but it could be worth the try, after all it’s only time instead of money. But I can’t help you on how to install that, I just know it’s frequent to have a dual-boot linux on mac sometime. Just make sure to have enought memory space on that linux drive partition to be able to install the game.
Ah, I see, so just wait for the cross-play to come, it will be there before 2026 end. Probably with the next major update, so just be patient for abit of time.
