Chilly's Civilization Concept: The Mayans

Hey folks, I posted this to reddit recently - thought I’d bring the discussion here as well.

The images below come from my civ concept of the Mayans for Age of Mythology Retold. And I had previously made a Chinese civilization concept and video.

As usual, these concepts are purely for fun and to encourage discussion. My designs focus on pop-mythology more than historical accuracy. And while I try to stay true to the AOM formula, I don’t factor in balance - realistically balance will depend on playtesting.

Some of the things I get most excited about in this design are:

  • Stackable buildings - This is something not seen before in this franchise but makes SO MUCH thematic sense if you think about it.
  • A Calendar system with rotating buffs - something I’ve wanted to see in an RTS for a while.
  • Hero Twins! - A prominent motif in New World mythologies that could bring a lot of flavor to this game.

I’ll be creating a video going over my thoughts on this design in much more detail soon. In the meantime, curious to hear what you guys think - Cheers!

While it’s very nice in terms of gods and myth units, your overuse of Aztec AOE3 units makes it feel less Mayan and more Aztec but with a different name. The Mayans with what little we know had a very distinctive style that was very different from the Aztecs.

I’d love to see another 2 hour video on this one! Not even being sarcastic, it was a great video.

I am curious about what your thoughts on the Chinese DLC are.

We see that with Fuxi’s Yin & Yang bonus, so this seems extremely doable.

Is it because the Maya civilization is lacking in some information that we are seeing some poaching involved here? For example: The TC building with the blue and red temples on top are temples to Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli, Aztec gods.

Also some of your units are directly ripped from the Aztec military like the Eagle Warriors and other things.

It would be inaccurate if say the Eagle warriors voicelines are all from the Maya ancient language when in reality they spoke the Nahuatl language. The Aztecs spoke Nahuatl. It’s kind of like making the Chinese civilization speak Japanese. It would just be awkward, weird, and inaccurate.

Will you do a concept for the Aztecs in the future? They have all of the lore and historical information you need to create a unique one. It’s the most popular request from the fans!

The way you’ve laid this out is beautifully illustrated. You’ve put a lot of thought into this and have interesting ideas.

I also had a look at your Chinese concepts, and to be honest I like some of your ideas better than what we got  The terracotta MUs multiplying as it stays still is really unique and a genius idea!

A bit of feedback on these MUs, however: a lot of them seem to have a throw/ displace special attack. I know this sounds critical, but I feel like that special ability has been overused in AoM and I’d love to seem some other unique special abilities.
