The Latin term Rutheni, an exonym, was used in medieval sources to describe all Eastern Slavic population in the east of Grand Duchy of Poand-Lithuania, an area encompassing territories of modern Belarus and Ukraine from the 15th up to the 18th centuries.
During the medieval period, the Ruthenian was most frequently applied to the people from former Kievan Rus.
