Civilization Suggestion : Crimean Khanate

I would like to suggest the Crimean Khanate as a future playable civilization in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.

The Crimean Khanate existed from 1441 to 1783, with its political centre at Bakhchysarai in Crimea. It was a successor state of the Golden Horde and one of the most important Tatar powers of Eastern Europe. For much of its history, it maintained a close alliance with the Ottoman Empire and played an important role in the politics and warfare of the Black Sea region, Eastern Europe and the Eurasian steppe.

The Crimean Khanate would be especially interesting because its military tradition was very different from that of most European civilizations. Its armies were famous for highly mobile cavalry, horse archery, raiding warfare and rapid campaigns, while Ottoman influence gradually introduced a greater role for firearms and professional troops.

I think this could translate into a very distinctive AoE3 civilization.

Core Gameplay Concept

The Crimean Khanate should focus on:

  • Extremely mobile cavalry
  • Horse archers and hit-and-run tactics
  • Raiding enemy economies
  • Fast movement across the map
  • Strong but relatively light armies
  • Limited access to traditional heavy European infantry
  • Ottoman diplomatic and military support
  • Black Sea and steppe trade

The civilization should reward players who constantly move their armies, attack enemy economic targets and avoid prolonged frontal battles.

Unique Military Units

1. Tatar Horse Archer

The basic ranged cavalry unit of the civilization.

Fast, relatively inexpensive and effective against exposed infantry and villagers, but weaker in prolonged direct combat.

Role: scouting, harassment and hit-and-run attacks.

2. Tatar Lancer

A powerful melee cavalry unit representing the heavily armed cavalry of the Crimean aristocracy.

They would be relatively expensive but excellent at charging weakened enemy formations.

Role: shock cavalry and finishing enemy units.

3. Murza

An elite noble cavalry unit representing the Crimean Tatar aristocracy.

Rather than simply having extremely high hit points, Murzas could gain combat bonuses when fighting alongside other cavalry or after successfully charging an enemy.

Role: elite cavalry and battlefield command unit.

4. Azap

Light infantry recruited from the Muslim population of the Khanate.

They would be cheaper and more numerous than conventional European infantry, but considerably less durable.

Role: inexpensive frontline infantry and support for cavalry.

5. Tatar Marksman

A specialized light infantry unit armed with firearms, representing the increasing importance of firearms in Crimean warfare during the later period of the Khanate.

Role: anti-infantry ranged support.

6. Nogai Raider

A very fast cavalry raider representing the close military connections between the Crimean Khanate and the Nogai steppe peoples.

The unit could gain a temporary movement-speed bonus after attacking villagers, economic buildings or trade infrastructure.

Role: economic raiding.

7. Gazi

An elite veteran cavalry unit available in the later game.

The Gazi could receive bonuses when fighting in enemy territory, making it particularly effective during offensive campaigns.

Role: late-game raiding and elite cavalry.

8. Kapikulu

A small elite firearm infantry unit representing the strong Ottoman military influence on the Crimean Khanate.

Kapikulu would be expensive but highly effective, providing the Crimean army with disciplined professional gunpowder infantry. They would contrast with the lightly equipped Tatar units and give the civilization a reliable answer to heavily armoured enemy infantry.

They could receive a bonus when fighting alongside Crimean cavalry, encouraging players to combine mobile Tatar horsemen with Ottoman-influenced firearm infantry.

Role: elite anti-infantry firearm unit and defensive support for cavalry.

Unique Buildings

Hansaray – Khan’s Palace

The Hansaray (Khan’s Palace) at Bakhchysarai should be the central unique building of the civilization.

Possible functions:

  • Produces the Khan or special political units
  • Unlocks unique Crimean technologies
  • Provides civilization-wide bonuses
  • Allows the player to choose different diplomatic policies
  • Generates a small amount of Coin

Its architecture could be inspired by the historic Palace of the Khans at Bakhchysarai.

Orda Camp

A unique military building representing the mobile steppe camp.

It could function as a combination of a Stable and Forward Camp.

Possible abilities:

  • Produces selected cavalry units
  • Can be packed and relocated
  • Provides a small movement bonus to nearby cavalry
  • Allows the player to establish temporary forward military positions

This would make the Crimean army genuinely mobile rather than simply giving the civilization another standard Stable.

Caravanserai

A unique economic building representing Crimea’s position on the trade routes connecting the Black Sea, Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe and the steppe.

Possible functions:

  • Generates Coin
  • Improves Trade Post income
  • Provides bonuses when connected to Trade Routes
  • Can receive livestock for additional resources

Mosque

The Mosque could play a more important gameplay role than a standard religious building.

Possible bonuses:

  • Religious technologies
  • Faster villager production
  • Small bonuses to nearby military units
  • Access to special Ottoman Alliance technologies

Unique Civilization Mechanic: The Khan’s Alliances

One of the most interesting possibilities would be giving the Crimean Khanate a diplomatic system.

Instead of relying entirely on conventional Age-up politicians, the Khan could choose between different political relationships.

Ottoman Alliance

  • Access to Ottoman firearms and artillery
  • Improved gunpowder units
  • Ottoman military shipments

Steppe Alliance

  • More powerful horse archers
  • Faster cavalry
  • Cheaper raiding units

Black Sea Trade

  • Stronger economy
  • Improved Trade Posts
  • More Coin from trade

Khanate Nobility

  • Stronger elite cavalry
  • Improved Murzas
  • More powerful cavalry shipments

This would give the Crimean Khanate several strategic paths instead of making it a one-dimensional cavalry civilization.

Possible Home City Shipments

“Tatar Raiding Party” – sends a group of fast cavalry.

“Nogai Allies” – sends Nogai Raiders.

“Ottoman Military Assistance” – sends Ottoman-style gunpowder troops.

“Black Sea Trade” – provides a large Coin shipment and improves trade income.

“Khan’s Guard” – sends elite Murzas.

“Steppe Horses” – temporarily increases cavalry movement speed.

“Bakhchysarai Arsenal” – unlocks advanced firearms technology.

“Kapikulu Detachment” – sends a small group of elite Kapikulu.

Why the Crimean Khanate Would Fit AoE3

The Crimean Khanate has almost everything needed for an interesting AoE3 civilization:

  • A distinctive historical identity
  • A very different military style from most European factions
  • Strong cavalry traditions
  • Horse archery
  • Ottoman connections
  • Important relations with Poland-Lithuania, Muscovy/Russia and the Cossacks
  • Black Sea trade
  • Steppe culture
  • Plenty of possibilities for unique technologies and Home City cards

Most importantly, it would not have to be simply “another cavalry civilization.”

Its defining feature could be mobility, raiding and strategic flexibility.

Imagine a Crimean player attacking an enemy economy with Horse Archers and Nogai Raiders, withdrawing before the enemy army arrives, establishing an Orda Camp elsewhere on the map, and then returning with heavier cavalry supported by Kapikulu and other Ottoman-influenced troops.

That would create a very different experience from playing France, Poland-Lithuania, Russia or the Ottomans.

Final Proposal

I think the Crimean Khanate would be an excellent candidate for a future Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition civilization, especially because it represents an important historical power that is still largely absent as a playable faction.

It could combine:

Steppe warfare + Ottoman influence + Black Sea trade + elite cavalry + horse archery + aggressive raiding

into one of the most unique civilizations in the game.

What do you think? Would you like to see the Crimean Khanate added to AoE3 DE?

Isn’t this civ kinda too similar to Poland conceptually?

Like the Tatar Horse Archer, Lancer and Murza are almost 1-1 to the Polish stable roster, you even gave them the same kind of Marksman Poland has.

I guess the “unique age up system” is what sets them apart, but then again dunno why you’d want to lock the artillery behind an age up option. (Also the descriptions of each Age up are kinda vague overall.)

I really hope [Demonym] [Function] are just placeholders and not what you think a major faction’s units should be named. Because thay really only works for minor civs.

I mean, it depends, like the Fulani Archer or the Oromo Horseman work for Hausa/Ethiopia because they indicate they are auxiliary units that aren’t from the civ you’re playing.

That said, yeah, calling your Crimean unit “Crimean Ghazi” is kinda… pointless. Like of course it’s a Crimean Ghazi you’re playing Crimeans.

Crimean Tatar Horse Archer is even more of a crime because it barely fits in the UI, if you upgrade it the unit name is gonna be too long lmao.

There’s already a quite good mod that covers the Tatars (not just the Crimeans, but generally) - however, it’s currently not being updated as far as I know… which is quite sad, bc. I really enjoy playing it against the Germans/Russians, espescially with sealingear’s renaissance-mods

Hopefully, the creator starts updating it as soon as the new DLC drops - it might be a copium, but a copium never the less

I hope that after Poland and Denmark, we’ll get an Asian DLC featuring Persia and Korea (or Oman). And then will be good time for expansion with Austria and the Crimean Khanate to complete all important european powers ( i don’t mean new revolution options).

Please Dev gods, please just add an Austrian Empire revolt to the Germans so we can avoid Austria being brought up all the time as a full civ suggestion

Historical and sales-related potential could make a final DLC focused on Europe possible. If Baltic Powers proves successful, we might see at least two more DLC packs. Next i think will be Asian Expansion. Shame, that we likely won’t get a fourth campaign - about Napoleon something everyone would probably love to see. If a Napoleonic DLC were added, Austria would have to be included (could be also added separately before that), as it was a constant adversary of Napoleon from the Italian campaign right up to his final fall in 1814. Marengo, Austerlitz, Wagram, and Aspern-Essling are battles that would be great to see in the game.

But consider:

Just use the german civ for that.

The Austrian army was very interesting especially during the Napoleonic Wars. In my opinion, if it were just a standard German faction for instance, at Austerlitz, instead of the forces of the Empire it would have been very weak.

Crimean Khanate and Austria , after then Great Napoleonic Campaign — would be amazing. I’m also looking forward to Persia, Morocco, Zulu and Korea. Brazil and Siam would likely be interesting choices, too.

Yes, should it be a European or Asian civilization? (In Chuvash Cape, the Tatars—similar to the Crimean Khanate—use the Chinese technology tree, so they would basically be reskinned Chinese)…

The Tatars are a civilization exclusive to the Chuvash Cape scenario in the Historical Battles in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.

Tatar armies are a mix of Chinese and Russian cavalry. When played in multiplayer or through the use of a mod, they use Indian architecture for Asian buildings, and Eastern European architecture for European buildings, with the Ottoman Mosque model.

Yes, I think that after TBP, they’ll focus entirely on Asia: the Middle East (Persia-Oman) and SEA (Burma-Siam) in 2027. Then they’ll let the game rest for a while to focus on AoMR (Incas and Persians), and then they’ll return to the Americas: a federal DLC in 2028 with Brazil-Argentina and maybe Tupi-Mapuche and a vol. 3 skin pack…

Yes, it’s strange that they didn’t already do it by putting it alongside Prussia or reworking Hungary into Austria (1804-1867) and this in turn into Austria-Hungary (1867-1918)…

Maybe they should move Hungary to Fortress and make Austria-Hungary a further “evolution”? Like Yucatán and German Confederation.

Regarding the question wheather the Tatars should be an European or an Asian civ, in a perfect Version of “my” game, they would be a REV option for the ottomans for AGE II (even earlier than the Livonian Order).

This would change their settlers to somewhat of “european cowboys” - defensive units that hunt on horseback with a better rate and can also somewhat hold themeselves against early raids.

Their units ONLY consist of cavalry - the big plus-point would be that they can be used to gather coins and XP by defeating units. Their gains in gold however then would be also be required to buy wood - therefore an extremely aggresive playstyle would quite match their handling, I believe…

To even further their military uniqueness, why not enable them to be able to shoot whilst moving, as the historic Tatars also would have fought like that…

Those are just mere suggestions, however, maybe some day a DEV sees it and starts building around that

Odd that no one is mentioning any of their musketeer units, such as chainmail-wearing Seymen.

For an Ottoman revolt (or rather, self-autonomy - they just did what they wanted most of the time), they could be their replacement to Janissaries (those these could still be a shipment option).

Also, they could also get Tabor access - something they historically shared with the Cossack Hetmanate due to the nature of frontier defense.

Yes, I don’t see why not…we need more revolutions in the Fortresses Age…
