Classic mode for AOM Retold

Hi, I wanted to know if there is any way to play Retold with the original game’s gameplay, or at least from Titans.
If not, I’d also like to know if somebody knows if at least there’s plans to include a classic mode, or even if there are some mods that could restore the old feeling.
I apologise if this has been asked before, I’ve been looking for a while and I havent seen any thread about this.

By classic mode, I’m assuming you mean the game behaves exactly the way it did in 2003? Probably not, since they have significantly changed myth unit special attack and myth technologies. The AI is also different, the damage system is different, the way unit interact (push each other around) is different. It would be a lot of work, but I would like that option too.

I get what you mean, even though the game is similar it does feel too different.

Yes, but honestly I’d settle with only removing some changes added in retold, such as the wonder age, multiple uses of gods powers, multiple Titans or water mythical units for every god.
Other changes like original AI would be nice but I get that would be more complicated.
It’s been a while since I played so I don’t know if any of those has been already added.

They have not been added yet, They did tease something in the last patch, Most people in comminuty think that they are going to add an option to disable wonders. The rest of the things you mentioned I don’t think will be added any time soon… sorry.

I see, at least that’s something. Thanks!

You could make a mod to do a lot of what you want.
Off the top of my head: removing wonder age bonuses, adding water myth back to specific gods instead of generic, adding back instant kill myth attacks, and making pop costs and pop limits to original are all very doable, along with stat rebalancing. God power limits I’m not sure on from a data-modding standpoint.

How easy would it be to give Argus his instant kill back with modding. I mean not just making his projectile deal 10000 divine damage to a single unit and they die instantly, but with the melting (flailing) animation as they slowly sink into the ground/ acid puddle? Wouldn’t that require some complicated modding that might not even be possible?

Just curious because I’d love to mod Argus special back in as it was 2003. So genuinely curious how it could be done.

as you said, instant kill part is easy
animation side, the animation for it doesn’t exist so you would have to create it from scratch. Pretty sure noone want to suffer this for that minor of a detail

For more general answer, doing a “legacy” mod involves a lot of things, Retold essentialy overhauled most of mechanics and stats.
There are ton of details and some things you can’t even change, like the accuracy system being totally different.

I remember a few months ago people said that Cyclop’s instant kill could not be reinstate currently, because the way its been programmed does equal damage to the unit being thrown and the units hit. So if they all take instant kill damage, every unit around the thrown one would die too :exploding_head:

You might be able to reuse an existing flail animation? Maybe without the sinking, so they flail when hit by the pool and then die?
But I don’t know how possible this is or if it would look good.

that was early, now we know we just need to add one flag to restore instant kill

maybe… it’s so specific, it’s not really worth it, but if you want to try, don’t hesitate to come to the modding section of official discord !

I think a comprehensive “Classic Mode” for Retold is unlikely, mainly because of the effort required to implement and maintain something like that, but also because of the possibility of it splitting the playerbase.

However, I do think having toggleable options in skirmish and multiplayer to enable or disable Wonder Age, timed Wonder victories, and reusable god powers is more realistic, and is something I would very much like to see implemented in a future update. Giving players more options is always a good thing.

A mod will definitely be made, but expecting the studio to do this is very unlikely. It would be a lot of time lost for minor interest from the community, most people enjoy Retold style.

Your best bet is to wait for a legacy mod to be released
