Iā€™m just surprised it took them this long to make an ā€œelephant on shipā€ icon.

I hope such DLCs bring features well beyond cool/funny icons - which events provide aplenty. But itā€™s noteworthy thereā€™s a long time since the last event. Maybe they will be paid now?

I donā€™t see myself buying cosmetic/aesthetic stuff, unless it goes full regionalizing - monks, vills, military that donā€™t look solely European.

If this was my dream, I guessā€¦ I guess I like being pestered, so Iā€™d have La Hire pestering me to sell me animated icons. Iā€™d decline, naturally. Iā€™d say ā€œno, I donā€™t want any of your blasted animated iconsā€.

(Apologies to David Firth.)

Maybe Iā€™m misjudging the playerbase, but I canā€™t really see these selling well enough to justify being made in the first place.

Iā€™d rather have architecture or campaign DLCs but I donā€™t care about icon packs, they are completely optional and if they help financing the game, then they are fine.

Agreed. Campaigns, Architecture sets, even unit skins I could selling. But icons? Might as well sell NFTs then. Maybe weā€™re both wrong and theyā€™ll sell hot cakes, but I wouldnā€™t hold my breath.

Me too. They could theoretically add a hundred or more campaigns over time. I am happy to pay for them all.

Architecture and unit skins too. Maybe even different voice lines (Iā€™m sure they could ā€˜spruce it upā€™ a little).

These icons are very beautifulļ¼Œbut I more like the DLC of regionalizing units model pack,Iā€™m Willing to buy units model pack for both AOE1 and AOE2.

Paying for an animated picture? That is kinda strange.
Seems to add very little to no value to the game.
But a DLC, next month there is an event with a cooler picture, money wasted.

You can also only have 1 profile picture.

The AoE3 Explorer/Hero DLC had a not more value:

  • Itā€™s 3D models (plus 2D icons) instead of just gif
  • Changes the appearance of one of the most important units that you interact with every match
  • Even changes voice clips in some cases
  • You get one for every civilisation
  • There are not many free ones you can choose from

Itā€™s not a gif, its a sprite-sheet in game files, like this:

It did take some effort from my side to convert these to gif to show you guys in forum in a presentable manner. 11

It would be awful if they would actually use gifs.
Gif is a file format that should not exist.
It has been outdated for over 20 years and it should never be used for anything today.

I already bought it. They are also avalailable as a bundle, by the way.

You are paying to support the development of the game .

ā€œThese are for those who want to freshen up their presence and wish to support the development of the game.ā€

This is intriguing and got me thinking maybe AOE2 is on a budget and needs some sort of crowdfunding?

I will buy this icons DLC since some icons look really cool (I like especially the codex and the Mangudai ones) and I love everything AOE2 related. Plus, itā€™s as cheap as a Burger King sandwich in my country.

Anyway, hereā€™s a suggestion: making the events content paid after the initial period. So people who couldnā€™t beat the challenges or simply missed them out entirely could get it for a small fee. Itā€™s a content marketing tactic that works well.

But they could make some real money by selling challenge scenarios DLC. I would love to play Mongol Raiders again.

this is addictive game design, monetizing fear of missing out. some european countries have been cracking down on these kinds of game mechanics

I was thinking of making this kind of content available for purchasing whenever people want to, just like a regular DLC. To sell it for a limited time, however, would be wrong indeed.

Moreover, at least based on playerā€™s opinions in this forum, icons and exotic reskins - like replacing units for Minecraft critters - arenā€™t the kind of stuff people crave to the point of lamenting if they miss out.

The tasks are boring and the vast majority of the rewards are dull. Itā€™s almost a parallel experience to the regular game and one that is just too vanilla to make people addicted.

I see it more as collectibles you can earn for free througout the event. Then, if you couldnā€™t achieve it, you can purchase it whenever you want to.

I donā€™t say this often, but EU based.
