Create an AOE 1 retold version

Definitive edition looks so unfinished that is almost disrespectful, as there is a boom with AOM this would be a great chance to bring life back to the game that started this all.

What I only liked of DE is the way the buildings look like, those are beautiful. The menu, the UI, the fonts, the icons, the overall aesthetics are upsetting.

There really is not the player base for this to make sense.

And there was for Age of Mythology? How big was the player base compared to AOE? Maybe the reason why there isn’t enough player base is because how unfinished and dull the game looks like?

I’m not saying it has to be the same exact game, I understand how limited the original game mechanics are, but the classic era deserves more than the current Definitive Edition gives and has so much more potential than the game gives

Retold’s and legacy AoM’s playerbase are significantly bigger than AoE 1’s.
But tbf, mistakes were made with AoE 1 DE as it was a Windows Store thus Win 10 exclusive for over a year during a time when the vast majority was still on Win 7.

Being honest to you i don’t see any scenario in which AOE1 would have a big playerbase, simply put AOE2 is a clear and obvious evolution and improvement on the system. What would AOE1 offer beyond simply a nostalgia trip? Why would anyone else play it over AOE2?

I think the more logical answer here is a new game entirely freed from AOE1s mechanics and dated design. Honestly i think maybe even 2 games as really the Bronze age and the iron age are very distinct periods.

Ask for a new game, not another remaster if you ask me.

Yes, also this. A new game, with moderno graphic (maybe Unreal Engine 5) set in the ancient times would be a good choice.

Ancient times are very loved. And recenti movies (gladiator 2 and Odissey) will improve this love a lot.

This Is the right Moment to develop a new AOE game set in this period.

I think the only way there could be an AOE 1 Retold is if they release another De-Definitive Edition and merge it with AOE2, calling it Age of Empires I&II Ultimate Edition. With this Ultimate Edition, they could take the opportunity to make changes to AOE1 to make it more similar to AOE2, such as the inclusion of unique units, unique technologies, and unique wonders. They could even add things from Chronicles, such as buildings like forts for each civilization, serving as the equivalents of the castles in AOE2, and units like the Palintonon, which would be the equivalents of the trebuchets in AOE2.

I haven’t played chronicles yet and also, i’m not an AoE1 player, but isn’t what you saying already exist with Chronicles and/or Return of Rome DLCs? I’m not questioning though, i’m asking cause i don’t really know.

I made a post asking people things like in this post, but i totally agree that AoE1 should be made justice one way or another. I played Return of Rome though and i liked how it played, but it saddens me that it didn’t get all campaigns from AoE1 and that it feels weird how the DLCs are handled. I mean, RoR is in AoE2, not in AoE1, you can play Chronicles civs with AoE2 civs but not with AoE1, wth? Imo, they should just make RoR the standard AoE1 and add DLCs like chronicles for AoE1 instead of into AoE2. It’s not like the AoE2 community seems to like it anyway.

Was there ever an official announcement that the game is essentially abandoned or on hold, like for AoE3DE?

I wonder why it was not possible to fix at least some more graphical bugs before stopping development, like the Armored Elephant’s glitched attack animation, the buggy Cactus eye candy, and the non-smooth shadows.

Yet the game’s forum, including the bug report section, is still open, although activity is close to zero (and the occasional messages are commonly by people who posted in the wrong forum).
