Crossbowmen and Knights are over-dominating the meta in Castle Age, More Unit-Variety is better

Not in Castle Age, where 80 Food is a huge investment for a unit taht will die 1v1 against a Pike.

I don’t understand your logic. I mean crosbow loose 1v1 vs elite skirmishers.

If you have 5 scouts alive, you normally upgrade them to light cav, its not like you never see light cav in the game.

And even as a viking, I tend to use a lot of light cav when I am facing someone that is spamming mangonels. I mean light cav upgrade is cheap, and even if you don’t go scouts at feudal, light cav still has its reasons to be researched, and is also cheap.

In arena you see even more light cavs, because they kill monks and siege.

Fun fact: they win in a 1v1 vs long sword if they have bloodlines.

Longswords are a different story. They are a different unit, different uses. I don’t understand your logic really.

You actually do not, you almost never see Light Cav in teh Caste Age, unless one of teh players is Turks, and he went for a Scout Rush.

I guess we play different games then…

We should promptly rename the ā€˜The Castle Age’ as ā€˜The Crossbow-Knight Age’ to make it more accurate and representative.
Dark Age -> Feudal Age -> Crossbow-Knight Age -> Unit Variety Age

It is SO amazing to see Aztecs and Celts go exclusively archers and crossbows in the ā€œCastle Ageā€, just like the Britons would.

Why?

It is dominated by Knights!

skirms, pikes, xbows, cav archers, knights, camels, siege units, jans, conquistadors, huskarls, eagles, monks and plumes. (and that doesn’t even mention the naval units).
all units that see common use in the castle age.
but keep pretending otherwise.

and oh no. 3 civs that commonly go for xbows are going for xbows.
you literally see knights, skirms, xbows and magonels in production. but yeah. keep pretending its only xbows. and you also see scorpions in that screen shot. what would we see if we looked at the entire map? way to cherry pick.

should we rename the dark age the villager age? oh wait sorry, more villagers are made in the castle age, guess we should name the castle age the villager age by that logic.

Oh yes, it is SO amazing to see Aztecs and Celts go exclusively archers and crossbows in the ā€œCastle Ageā€, just like the Britons would.

Nothing to see here, no issues! Everything is fine! T90fine

because both have such great knights…oh wait…

I also like how you ignore that…
knights, skirms, pikes, magonels, rams, scorpions, monk, and even genoese crossbows were made during the castle age in that one very cherry picked game.

It is not a cherry-picked game, it is the game i was watching literally as i was writing my replies here, on youtube.
I yet again observed the same phenomena that i posted about in OP in the game I happened to be watching as well!

knights, skirms, pikes, magonels, rams, scorpions, monk, and even genoese crossbows were made

Ya sure, just few of each as opposed to 100+ crossbows on the map by 4 out of 6 players(regardless of civ identity) counts so much to unit variety, nothing to see here, no issues! Everything is fine! T90fine
BTW it is The Crossbow-Knight Age, so Knights are more than expected

Aztecs go for Eagles and Crossbows, until they can upgrade Atlatl, at which point it is Eagles and Elite Skirms.

Celts typical Castle Age Army is Pikes + Scorpions/Mangonels + Woad Raider.

Celts do not even have Bracer or Ring Archer Armour, so going for a lot of Crossbows is a losing strategy for them, specially wehn those resources can field much more efficient Scorpions, which become amazing with Furor Celtica.

Also, Celts do use Longswords, as theirs are very fast.

And yet you ignored the chance to use hte video before that had camels.
you also cherry picked your screenshot to show when it was just xbows on the map in a castle age that literally saw pikes skirms knights xbows genoese xbows, monks, literally every siege unit available, etc.

1 to 2 each? sure. way to continue your train of exaggeration. i saw 2 scorpions in one screenshot alone. but keep trying. i literally pulled up the video and watched it.

here ill even link it so everyone else can see ā€œ1 to 2 of each of thoseā€ and see just how honest you are.

no matter what you do parthnan there is always going to be a ā€œpower unitā€ to be massed. that is always the case. you nerf knights and crossbows and something new will become the knight and crossbow and you’ll just be in the same situation.

this has been proven in every RTS game ever made.
there is always an optimal build or a best unit, or a best composition. something is always ā€œbetterā€.
this was the point i was getting to in my previous post, but people flagged me for it.
no matter what game you play there is always a most optimal. whether it be an RPG, a MMO, a Sports game, or an RTS. some things just work better.

Nah this was a well thought design, man at arms and militia are good units for their respective ages. They don’t have any proper counter in feudal age except scouts with bloodlines or 4+ fletching archers

This is a strawman at this point, nobody trains light cav in castle age either because knights outclass them in every way. 80 food is also a much bigger investment in castle age than 45f 20g. LS at least have (or had in WK) their uses for malians

That’s why i was thinking castle age. it doesn’t have to happen, but i think it would help the Militia line in general.
much like hitting feudal age makes you instantly research tracking, once you hit castle, you instantly get supplies.
45 food militia and man at arms would be a bit much in dark and feudal age.
but in the castle age? nah.

Celts xbows is a fine strategy (nobody researches thumb ring until the boom is done anyway) with their wood bonus until they can switch to woads or Halb siege

i’m just tired of people being upset about xbows and knights. as if something else wouldn’t replace them if they nerfed them. its like people have never played a video game before. there is always a ā€œmost optimal, best, etcā€

Perhaps they could decrease the training speed of crossbowmen and knights in castle age. That way they can’t mass as fast as they can now or they have to invest extra wood in production buildings which means less wood for crossbowmen and less farms for knights.

This in turn gives you more time to react with pikes/skirms/mangonels so you can gather more resources and actually reach imp.

both pikes and skirms are made faster then the units they counter.
