Crown of Castille civilization Concept by FERNISgamer

This is my submission to the DIY Civilization Competition hosted by Kameho, but it is also the culmination of a lot
of copium from me craving since the release of AoE4 to the Spanish to be added in any shape and form, and i feel that just before the announcement at the gamescom this year is the perfect time to try to guess how the Spanish, or in this case the Crown of Castille and León could be if added in the game. Of course we thought of a lot of ideas that in the end got discarded to keep the civilization just right, ill happily talk about those.

Im also a junior concept artist finishing my studies, so all of the art is made by me.

One last disclaimer: I made this concept with the help of my friends when it comes to ideas for civs bonus, unique units and mechanics, but none of us is any good at the game at all! So the balancing and some numbers if mentioned might be off!

It’s strange that the Conquistador doesn’t appear like some UU or UT; I’d rename the Captain to Adelantado, after that the rest are fine… the wonder would be the Torre de Oro, right? Or the Escorial Palace…

The wonder is the Burgos Cathedral, i forgot to include it in the concept infographic, but i drew it in the illustration adove showcased in light just like the og civ portraits. Why? There is only one cathedral in the landmarks, and Burgos is one of my favorites i like its asymetrical blueprint.

Ah yes, it’s a good choice… since it dates from the imperial age, it should have the 16th-century renovations, such as the dome and the cimborio…

I like the concept. Some ideas could be improved, but overall, the idea of Authority is very cool, I suppose to represent the Spanish courts during the Reconquista and the Spain period. I quite liked many of the ideas for unique units, and the fact that you kept the tercios and pikemen of tercios for the Imperial Age.

Regarding balance and more about historical representation:

Economic balance

That said, I think that in the Dark Age (I) and Feudal Age (II), the Spanish seem to lack basic economic bonuses. Many of the advantages you mention are for the Castle Age (III), and in the event of a Rush in Feudal Age, the civ would be in serious danger.

I would suggest, given that Authority allows sheep production (I suppose representing the Mesta Council), that Mesta also be a unique bonus:

  • Majada (Sheepfold) : A unique building, a shepherd’s hut, allows the generation of Merino sheep over time, which can be automatically sent to the city center, with a high movement speed. It doesn’t work “near buildings”; it has to be done outside the city.

  • Vía Pecuaria (Livestock Path) (III) - Technology, improves Merino sheep production in the Sheepfold and its movement speed.

Knights in Alcazars

I think you meant to represent the Mesnada idea with knights limited to Alcazars. However, consider that the Rus also had Druzhina to represent their heavy cavalry, and they have no knight limit in the Feudal Age.

In fact, the knights in basic Spain weren’t limited to noble ranks or castles as in other kingdoms, and were even recruited from the civilian population as Villain Knights (who became their light cavalry unit) or Infanzones. Those who were generally noble were the Knights of Religious Orders, and they were usually assigned Forts (Alcazares) or Monasteries.

In fact, Alcazares would be a good idea to include religious military Orders, such as Calatrava or Santiago, and their control of forts. Instead of limiting the number of knights, a number of “Knights of Order” could be established as a special heavy cavalry unit, limited to the number of Alcazares.

In fact, the knights of Spain were not limited to noble ranks or castles as in other kingdoms, and were even recruited from the civilian population as Villain Knights or Infanzones. Those who were generally noble were the Knights of Religious Orders, and they were usually assigned Forts (Alcazares) or Monasteries.

The type of Order Knights could depend on the type of Order you upgrade the Keep to, and could have different protection abilities (more attack near sacred sites, bonus against camels, more gold for sacred sites, etc.)

Landmark: Castle of Olite

I know it’s nice, but it was from Navarre, not Castile. It passed to Castile when it annexed Navarre in 1512. In any case, if the civ were called Spain, it could be included, otherwise there are plenty of historical Keeps from Spain in the Castile area. It could very well be an Alcazar of the religious Orders, like Catatrava or Santiago.

Overall, it’s a good concept. I really liked many of the ideas, and the fact that you kept the tercios and tercio pikemen for the Imperial Age.

Regarding the early economy, the lack of it in the early game is intentional, perhaps i have been too harsh with thah philosophy, i had some iterations around sheep and merino wool, but ended up discarding it beacose it granted so much safe resources under the TC, and i want the player to expand and “conquer”, this might be unrealistic due to the actual meta, i actually like the idea of producing sheep far from the base, i wish this mechanic was added to the mongols to fix their ugly bases.

I wanted to limit knights in favor of a really strong and well rounded light cav, similar to the camel rider in stats. But i didn’t want to delete knight completely, i had some religious orders ideas but they where too complex to coexist with the Authority mechanic, so i scraped them, i should have left 1 bonus or tech in the monastery that maked knighs more special.

I know the Palace of Olite is from Navarre and not Castille, this is my way to see it: If you make the Castle of Olite, you are playing with Navarre, this is actually one of my favorite parts of the concept, with this landmark you are encouraged to make more castles and cavalry, french fashioned, it kinda clicks for me having a neighbouring landmark that works as some crossover between two civs, i hope this makes sense.

By the way im not trying to make excuses, your points are really valid, and some of them are problems that it seems i couldn’t fix effectively. Just wanted to share some insights of my thought process.

Not bad. However, I would just simply call this civ “Castilians”.

Yes, that would be nice…
