Yes let’s go back to Byzantines having Middle Eastern architecture aka having Mosque instead of Orthodox Church.
Building graphics are modded modifying their SMX (or whatever they are using now) files. If someone doesn’t like unique castles or monks, they can just grab Euro castles and monks graph files, copy, paste them and rename them. It’s that simple.
To make this an option, you have to modify inner data files, not just the GUI, which is way harder
Not only I didn’t have an issue but I loved it. As well as these new skins. I mean, where are we going to stop, then? Just make the civs all have the same voice lines as well? Might as well play on full tech tree too
What the hell are you smoking brother
Because in this case it goes against the spirit of the game. Why wouldn’t we want to see the civ represented when we chose it at game start? For me this entire thread is akin to people asking for an “easy mode” on Dark Souls. I mean, yeah, it could be done, be it’d break its spirit.
First, people are fine with 2 monk skins doesn’t mean they’re fine with 9 skins. That’s a slippery slope.
The simple solution would be to give a few options for people to choose from, mainly to revert the graphics back to the old version if they want, something like:
- Standard+: All unique & regional skin, including skins that added in the future
- Standard: Non-military unique skin + Monk + UU skins, so like in the next patch
- Classic (DE): Before the next patch
- Classic (The Conquerors): AoC graphics
etc.
Anything that is added after that version will be unaffected,
e.g. If you choose the Conquerors, the Burgundians will still have their unique castle, since they didn’t exist in the Conquerors and the ‘oldest’ graphics they used is that unique castle. However, all trade carts will change back into old skin, because the concept of ‘regional trade cart’ did not exist back then, it depends on whether the civs have horses or not.
I think most people will be happy with this. Solution is always around if you are actually willing to look for one.
I think it’s matter of time. They need money to keep the game alive but we all know, and we all know they can’t add unlimited amount of civs.
They tried Chronicles and VoV, they also tried that cosmetics player Icon DLC, pure cosmetic, but just not for units or buildings. Also cosmetic DLC for units highly demanded from the players, at least in all of the polls I saw. It’s natural to go for that in the future.
“Why there is 10 different-looking units but actually the same?”
“How about that purple unit? Wielding a club with a round shield, must be an infantry… oh no it’s another monk.”
If you played the Chronicles you’ll know the struggle of adapting completely different graphics sets of units, and if they really add more regional skin in the future. Imagine the issue it might cause to some players.
Different people have different preferences, and we’re only suggesting a function to allow people to choose what they prefer, and I’ll never see how it’s a bad thing.
Once again, I don’t really see any of you are foundationally against the idea itself. But maybe you think it’s in a lower priority, which is totally fine.
Good to know original AoE2 graphics go against the spirit of AoE2.
Like AoE3
They had to do it that way for simplification and budget constrains. If they had the budget they have now there would have been more unique graphics.
But it also doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t prefer just 1 monk skin, right?
Why do you think that there is more people that only want unique castles for new civs but not all civ then people that want them for no civ?
Wouldn’t that be more logical to want? Everyone or no one, right?
I’m not sure. Generally selling cosmetics is never popular. People didn’t really care when they sold icons because that is very inconsequential.
The big difference between a regional unit skin DLC and all the cosmetics in all the other games is that you can’t brag with your skins.
One of the main reasons why people waste money on weapon skins is because they think other people will think they are cool when they see them in the lobby or something.
But they aren’t.
Teuton, Malian, Celt and Japanese Champions are very different yet they look the same.
Briton Crossbows are a lot more like Longbows then they are like other civs Crossbows.
I did and no I didn’t struggle.
New players aren’t the type of players that saw the same sprites for 25 year and are so used to them now that they get confused when they see something different.
AoE4 does perfectly well with having unique skins for every civilisation. If it’s a guy with a spear people understand what the guy does even if he doesn’t wear Western European clothes.
And I do think that 90+% of players would get used to regional skins in less then a month if they are done well. Like not giving units completely different weapons and stuff like that.
So I’m kind of afraid that some people would want to ruin their own experience because they are afraid of change.
Just go back to the release of AoE2DE and how many people were critical of the new looks of the game. Barely anyone wants to go back to AoE2HD now.
I think there are to many different combinations of what people want that it can’t really all be official settings unless they dedicate like a whole setting page to that.
The ideal solution is indeed like a whole setting page, but before that, I think an option to revert the version of graphics should satisfy most people.
I don’t really get the whole “You either go 100 or 0” arguments, I mean, no middle ground? no suggestion? no solution? we’re just here for endless arguments?
The current version of the game is already like this - some civs get unique castles, and some don’t. ‘revert to older version of the game’ is pretty reasonable request.
And I don’t even think it’s that hard to implement. If any of you even play with the scenario editors, they already have a trigger effect that allows you to individually change the graphics ID of each object, and it only affects the player you specified. no mods, no datapack, already in game.
I imagine that the settings page will do something same.
It wasn’t even a question.
They’ve explained why in this thread. Why do you think professional players’ opinions are somehow relevant here?
For units like monks, sure. For buildings, no, it’s not possible to do this with a graphics mod, as I explained before – the garrison flags and fire graphics end up in the wrong places. Only a data mod could do this, and they have all kinds of downsides that in-built options don’t have.
I’m not convinced this is true. In the scenario editor, each player’s architecture set can be selected independent of civilisation, and that doesn’t change the data files. This option could work in a similar way, and I imagine the technology behind it would be the same. It would effectively switch, e.g. Celts, Frank and Burgundians to have the architecture set of Britons (except for wonders).
Not sure about data mods but with something as simple as a few triggers you can make a building look like a completely different one, destruction animation and snow included. That doesn’t solve permanently the issue of people not wanting new skins, but if you can change it just with triggers I doubt it’s impossible to change it with a data mod.
The irony is this whole thread will be pretty much irrelevant the moment the patch drops. The whiners who think taking 0.5 sec longer to recognise a monk from a villager will just quietly suck their thumbs and fade away. All the while this is noise here.
I didn’t say it was!:
Why would you misquote me like that?
For most of them, including the OP, it’s not about readability.
Seriously, why are people in this thread not even bothering to read what other people have written?
Arent flags and fire graphics just diferent graphics? Wouldnt each castle having its own skin mean that you can just change those new files with the original castle ones?
I find it interesting that people against an idea that doesn’t even affect them, exist.
How about… no ? Or… no ?
