Developers, why The Knights Templar are variant civ?

This is a rhetorical question, I do not expect answer,

I want to point, that it is clear to everybody, that variant civs are less “attractive” than “basic” civs

The Templars are mechanically completely unique, and do not share anything (except language) with the French, so why thay are clasificated as Variant civ?

If You put a bit more effort - a bit architecture and civilisation mastery, they could (should) be own unique civilisation, not a variant.

Because Templar knights weren’t a civ with own culture. They are mix of European orders and civs.

Still dunno why everyone malding because of civ and variant.

To be frank, not everyone thinks this. Everyone I know IRL, (typically, these are people who do not post on internet forums), really like the variants. They see them as having more flavour than the base civs.

In most cases they prefer playing the variants over the base civs.
