I want to say they did this to minimize the cost and efforts but that seems to be prohibited.

So I say it’s actually a very historical, very well-thought-out design that fits perfectly into the standard design principle of the game.

Totally agree. I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t get units that spoke the language from the origin country of their order.

Varangian guards are Nordic or Anglo-Saxon, but in the game they speak Greek. So it’s a common practice in the game. You can also consider it as foreign units having to speak French to communicate with the French majority. And French was an “international language” back then. It’s perfectly fine.

Yep they need to fix it, its so weird hearing Spanish and Polish Troops speaking French, same with Italian Genoses Crossbow, shoud speak Italians

The Spanish unit has no voiceline at all.

I am not sure though if historically these people may have spoken to each other in French anyway?

Unfortunately, no!

“And whoever heard such a mixture of languages in one army? There were present Franks, Flemings, Frisians, Gauls, Allobroges, Lotharingians, Alemanni, Bavarians, Normans, English, Scots, Aquitanians, Italians, Dacians, Apulians, Iberians, Bretons, Greeks, and Armenians. If any Breton or Teuton wished to question me I could neither reply nor understand.” (Fulcher of Chartres, pg. 88)

I understand it’s a game, but if you hire mercenaries as byzantine you get their OG lines. That varangian guards thing is 1 out of 30~ units where a non-native byz unit speaks greek (and it’s a mainline UU, not a hired unit). I’m sure many others were like me and were hoping for these new units to hint at future factions, but alas.

Byzantine mercenaries all have corresponding base units from other civs, which all have their voicelines already.

The Templar units, despite thematically being mercenaries, don’t have base units because Venice, Genoa or Poland do not exist in the game. So they are effectively Templar UUs.

And reusing voicelines is a standard practice in the game just like reusing building models. So it’s not violating anything.

Polish Heavy Cavalry speaking native french feels so bad and out of place
