Aztecs design is “they didn’t have artillery or cavalry so we’re just gonna make up units to make it work”
Inca design is “they had cavalry and artillery but we’re just gonna ignore that and make stuff up”
In my opinion that’s much worse.

I’d have to take a look at the book, but I’m not super confident that it would have much information. I know the Tupi had a wooden cannon, but I haven’t seen anything about North America.
I found it. It seems to be an unsuccessful attempt during the second siege of Fort Henry.
I’d prefer some solutions based on native technologies like this:
You missed my point. The Aztecs have dudes wearing priest costumes and acting as shock infantry, or berserkers dressed as the general, among other problems.
Those are the Aztec units I have the least issue with. A guy dressed as a nimble predatory animal is a great fit for a shock infantry unit. Skull Knights are a reasonably accurate depiction of Cuachicqueh so I’m not sure what the issue is. The primary problem with Aztecs is they are massively anachronistic so the only way to make them viable game play is to take some liberties with unit design. Inca doesn’t have that problem, they’re just weird for no good reason.
To attract AoE2 players: garrisoning units, converting priest, houses as walls, llama wool for more HP on villagers and so on…
Yeah but they could have made something actually novel with the idea like separating the unit training buildings in melee, ranged and siege like AoE2, instead of just doing a lazy copy of the Aztec roster + gimmicks.
The coyotes were warrior priests and often participated in battles, but they didn’t serve any raiding/ambush role. This was made up by the devs who thought it was “cool”.
This is what the cuachiqueh looked like:
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the Aztecs having a siege archer to compensate for the lack of artillery. Better this than captured mortars. This isn’t an issue imo.
Yep. They are actually one my most disliked part of the natives.
Tribal Marketsplace should have been Buffalo Drives/Jumps for Lakota and only Lakota, as Hauds were involved with metal-working. Though we are veering into other native territory there.
Community Plaza should have been a building ‘tailored’ to the Native Civ in question, for example Aztecs could have so easily have been a temple (teocalli) (or an administrative palace -tecpans), instead a place for villagers to stand very inoffensively doing not a lot in a plaza.
A complete wishlist type of element for Aztecs would be a Tavern equivalent - the Pochteca Guild. Again, an equivalent for other natives too (Trade Lodge/House etc). Pochteca were the high status Merchant/trader class (still under Nobles) who could be wealthy enough to afford private armies. This aspect and the fact that they were important to the economy links us to the Tavern’s function of hiring Mercs and trickling a small amount of Coin.
Would also be nice to be able to hire some unique central American mercs like Chichimec archers.
They could alternatively be called Zacatecas Archer. The Zacatecas were apparently known to be excellent marksmen and they were one of the several tribes who lived in an area that went by the same name as the tribe “Zacatecas” which was never conquered by the Aztecs. Zacatecas is derived from Nahuatl and means “where there is abundant zacate (grass)”.
