I find the water gameplay of aoe4 so ugly. Water maps are the most banned in ladder. How would you guys fix this?
Water play in any AOE game is one of those things that most players donât find entirely enjoyable but if left out of the game(s) would cause a riot. Itâs just how things are in Age world.
I think combining the water economy of AoE3 with the counter system of AoE2 could work, but again, Iâm dubious that water will ever be popular in these games regardless of how well done it is.
A lot of people who play ranked donât like water maps in the franchise because they donât like having to learn more build orders and play differently.
I personally have no problem with hybrid maps (water is optional) because I like Comp Stomps and having the ability to go water for a eco boost and fight to keep it is a nice change of pace once in a while. I havenât seen much complaining about hybrid maps when I have hosted Comp Stomps from different games in the franchise.
I think the naval warfare in this game is the best designed so far in the series. It took some elements from AOE-3, like the side attacks of ships, and improved them. Being able to hide in weeds in the water is something interesting.
In my opinion I think it just needs more personality, like manned fishing boats, new economic sources, like being able to extract coins from oysters (although they would have to change the concept of âgoldâ to âcurrencyâ so that multiple sources make sense as currency, and not just âgoldâ counts as âcurrencyâ)

At least I think that in the future, if the game keeps growing, they will have to invent more ship subtypes, especially now that the campaigns have sea levels, there are many Civs that had units that escape the conventional rule made in the game: âWar galleys with frontal cannons (Spain, Venice, Ottomans), battleships like the Turtle Ship (Korea), Boarding Ships of Bereber Corsairs (Morocco, Andalus) etcâ.
Also, like AoE3, a FlagShip for Imperial Age would be incredible (SeaDog Galleon for English, La Real for Spanish, Tekkousen for Japanese, etc), but i woul have to make another thread about tat.
As far as I see the best naval systems of the saga are recent:
- The one from Age of Mithology Retold, with up to 5 types of military units (3 ships, 2 mythical)
- The one from the Rome at Bellum Mod, canon in AoE2 DLC: Battle for Greece, with up to 6 military units (explosive ship, fire ship, ram ship, arrow ship, catapult ship, large ballista ship).
The sea levels in the Battle for Greece campaign were great, and the ones in AoM Retold were challenging.

The ones in Sultan Ascend were also amazing, but they have only one flaw: In the last level, Cyprus, if you accumulate too many Warships, there is not much combat dynamics, they destroy all the sea buildings very easily, and they donât give you any problems at sea anymore and arrow ships are no longer very useful in the Imperial Age. I think if the AI ââbuilt more carracks and fireships it would have been a more challenging challenge. Also, because the orange town is very close to the coast, you can take down their entire army from the sea.
I think water gameplay is pretty good. I would like it to be a bit more nuanced, but the additional dimension to gameplay is invaluable.
the only problem with water is that itâs too much all or nothing, you can lose control of the entire water in 2 min. Your entire fleet can die to a demo ship.
To fix thatâs its would be quite simple actually.
Make demo ship only castle or imperial. Demo ship arenât part of the counter triangle anymore.
Instead, add a new ship in feudal that complete the counter triangle but that doesnât explode and kill everything.
Make water defenses stronger. So that you donât immediately lose all the water in 2 min. One good way to achieve this would be to allow docks to guarison 5 fishing ship, and fishing ship can shoot arrow at ships when guarrisoned (but cannot shoot land units).
That would completely fix water .
the one in Age of Mythology is more interesting due to myth units, but still yeah i like naval warfare in here
totally. Me im not good in water maps, but no way will i go ââREMOVE WATER MAP PLIZââ when they are there to give more options to the gameplay. obviously only tryhards say this
