I am really excited for the Dromons. Why you ask? It could be the possible CG replacement for the Romans, Huns, Cumans, Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. I know the former two civs have it, but I want to be clear on the no gunpowder theme.
Oh by the way, all these 3 ships benefit from Siege Engineers.
My proposal:
Dromon - as it is - available to all civs just upon hitting Imperial Age
Cannon Galleon - removed conceptually
Elite Cannon Galleon - name and graphics changed to that of Cannon Galleon. Receive -1 range. Require Chemistry to upgrade from Dromon to Cannon Galleon as usual. Available to civs which have ECG currently.
So now we start with a siege ship on the water, which can be upgraded to a gunpowder siege ship. This can help show the adoption of gunpowder later, but with every civ having access to the same generic unit at first.
Problem: Changing unit type with upgrades is not allowed. This may create problem with gunpowder bonuses affecting Cannon Galleons.

The dromon will be a regional unit for the Romans, Byzantines, Huns and Goths, that replaces the CG. As for the Cumans and American civs that lack the CG, I do not know if they will have it.
I do not think it’s intended to be upgraded to the ECG as the dromon acts more like a long-ranged mangonel, firing several missiles at once.

It would need to be renamed to Catapult Galleon to be in-line with Cannon Galleons. Personally I think it is strange to have a single ship with an real name for a type of ship, yet all the other ships are just named after what they do or what kind of ship they are.

It’s named “cannon galleon” to differenciate it from the galleon, and uses the same overall model while the dromon is an entirely different hull.
But if we go down this rabbit hole, the galleon should not exist in AOE2, it should be renamed “cog” to be historical.
The Cog is a Type of ship, galleys and Galleons are kinds of ship, The Cog is a type of sailing vessel, a Galley is a ship with oars and sails and a Galleon is a large Galley. A galley upgrading into a cog would be one ship turning into a completely different ship, the issue is a Dromon is a type of Galley
It doesn’t replace CG as Goths have both as per tech tree.
