Extremely uneven matches in ranked ladder despite short search time

Issue:

The issue I want to report is not fully a gameclient-issue, but some observations with occasional really weird matchmaking in multiplayer. It could very well be not a “bug” at all, but some cases seem weird enough to warrant reporting.

There are some cases of high level players getting extremely uneven matches (matched with players from pretty much the opposite side of bell curve, something along the lines of 2000 ELO vs 400 ELO), while sometimes not even having that long queue time.

I’m going to use Kvoth’s account - https://aomstats.io/profile/1073754430 - as an example, because he seems to suffer the most from it. Here are some of his matches:

Now, he does play a lot in hours where ranked ladder is pretty dead, but - there always seem to be at least some players in 1,3k-1,6k ELO range queueing up. One would expect Kvoth to eventually get matched with one of them.

Some people I’ve discussed this with dismiss this as just matchmaking matching a player with whoever else is available after a certain period of time (which, by the way, is also not okay, but arguably not a bug), but I have a theory that there is some sort of bug related to low ELO players searching for games, potentially after them searching for a while their lower boundary of search overflows and as such they get matched against top ELO guys.

I think it should be addressed in some way, if there’s actually something buggy going on with search times, it should be fixed. If that’s the intended way matchmaking behaves, I’m gonna argue it should prevent such matches as well (a good threshold for me seems to forbid matches between players when the higher ELO opponent is going to get +0 ELO for a win). These matches aren’t good for either of players.

Trigger Event:

queueing up in ranked multiplayer

Repro Steps:

  1. be a very high or very low ELO player
  2. try to find a match
  3. get an extremely uneven match, in some cases despite not having a very long search time

Frequency of this behaviour depends on time when particular player queues up. Obviously it happens less when there’re a lot of good players queued up.

Hey @Envy, thank you for the detailed report. This is a known issue and is already tracked
