Hi Punkmunster, if your save file is from a date prior to a recent update, it regrettably will not work.
This is a known difficulty, where each update breaks compatibility with past saves and recorded games.

The error message should be made much more accurate and user friendly, then. A player like OP shouldn’t waste a bunch of time troubleshooting and doing things like, potentially, reinstalling the game, when devs could easily have the error read:

“ERROR #12345: This saved game file was created during a now-outdated patch version of the game and is no longer accessible or playable. Each new patch for the game can, and often will, render old saved game files obsolete. Visit ageofempires.com/support/error12345 for more information.”

The error # provides a reference to help Google searches. The verbiage clearly says in real human terms what the issue is. It’s the bare minimum of what any good error message should do.

If it also said what patch version it was created in and what the current version of the game is, great… bonus.

  • Knowing the old patch #, which is probably recorded in the file (and if it isn’t then it should be) can help players track down a way to play or view their old game again someday… whether it be three years from now, or 20 years from now when who knows what methods will exist to let us open old save files.

Since pretty much no other games I’ve ever owned has saved game files that break, I think it’s a travesty this game does. And because virtually no other game does, I think it is only morally right that the error message provide the player with explanatory details

My Minecraft files from 10 years ago still work perfectly, no problem, despite the game getting numerous updates over the years. Same with, like I say, 99.9% of games I’ve ever owned
