Currently, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition allows players to create only one “Personalized” civilization list in the civilization selection screen.
I propose expanding this system to allow multiple user-defined civilization lists, each with a custom name, to improve multiplayer usability, strategic preparation, and accessibility.
Problem
-
Players prepare differently depending on:
-
Map type (Arena, Arabia, Islands, Nomad, etc.)
-
Strategy focus (Archers, Cavalry, Monks, Water)
-
Single player, multiplayer, Empire Wars…
-
-
With only one personalized list:
-
Players must constantly edit it between games
-
Preparation is slow during multiplayer lobbies
-
Newer players struggle to remember which civilizations fit which situations
-
Proposed Solution
Allow players to create multiple custom civilization lists in the “Choose Civilization” screen.
Key Features
-
Create, rename, and delete civilization lists
-
Each list:
-
Has a custom name
-
Contains any number of civilizations
-
-
Lists are local to the player
-
Lists affect only filtering, not gameplay
-
Fully compatible with multiplayer and ranked games
Benefits
-
Faster civilization selection in multiplayer
-
Better strategic preparation
-
Reduced lobby delays
-
Improved accessibility for new and casual players
-
No balance or competitive impact
Closing
This feature builds naturally on an existing system and provides significant quality-of-life improvements with minimal risk.
It would be especially valuable for multiplayer, custom lobbies, and tournament play.
