Feedbacks on upcoming water rework

Why would civs with special boats lack demolition boat? It makes no sense.

Water maps are the least played ones in ranked.
Water-focused tournaments are less popular.

This is subjective, though…

Do you need more evidence?

I disagree. It’s a calculated step in the right direction, taking funds that could be directed towards paid content.

i personally didn’t like water maps because pure waterplay isn’t interesting. hybrid maps however I enjoy(ed) a lot. same goes for tournaments. In general I think hybrid maps are the most popular in tournaments. I don’t think the water rework will improve hybrid maps, nor do i think there is need for improvement.

yeah, i think a proper poll with fair options would be good:

maybe one poll with:

  • i like the current water
  • i feel neutral about the current water
  • i dislike the current water

one with:

  • i prefer the current water system
  • i feel neutral
  • i prefer the rework

and another with:

  • i think the current water is good as it is
  • i think the water balance needs better balance between existing units
  • i think the water balance needs additional units (eg hulk, boarding ship, repair ship, etc)
  • i think the water balance needs more buildings
  • etc

actually I’ll make that post…

there are so many other things that actually need fixing. lobbies, crashes, translations, restores. this feels like a completely wasted effort

You are way too sekectively critical. Maybe for you that isn’t super high on the priority list.
I also agee on some points of your list, however a lot of these points aren’t solved just by effiort and only a very limited personel can actually contribute to that - possibly the effort is even too high for the workforce capacity and/or it’s just a matter of time until someone finds the right approach to solve these issues.

A naval rework was asked for from a lot of people and I think ti can greatly enhance the game experience. It’s NOT a wasted effort. Maybe that’s not FOR YOU. But who are you to get from your personal preferences to tell the devs what is “wasted effort” and what not?
It’s easy to criticize. But maybe it would be the better approach to try to actually positively CONTRIBUTE to a constructive development.

That doesn’t need you have to like everything the devs do. I don’t like the water rework as it is. Because I don’t see a plan behind it. I don’t see what it is aimed to achieve gameplaywise and the narratives around the changes I don’t really get. Why were demos demonized? (I generally think the easy solution would be a ramming ship instead anyways) What’s the problem with the different bonus damages as long as it WORKS? I didn’t really see an improvement in the interactive waterplay with that torunament - and I also don’t see that devs actually even TRIED to fix that. Water is still super snwobally and timing focussed. And there are clear favorite ship lines at each timings/maps that lead to “mirroring strategies” which are boring cause they just snowball once one side gets the lead. Or one side just has the advantage because they know the meta better.

I miss a concept, an idea for that rework. I don’t see where it’s aimed to go and I can’t see a real improvement to before. Maybe if demos are now a bit more useful than in that tournament it would be minimally better, but the rework doesn’t exite me for water - for me the main critique points remain.

we don’t even know if this is a loud minority asking for it, or an actual majority. it might be another Romans fiasco where most people seem to dislike their addition to ranked.

it is a wasted effort in so far as the things I am requesting would benefit everyone, or at least be neutral.
nobody can reasonably against fixing crashes, nobody can reasonably be against better translations, functioning lobbies etc. whereas this change will make the game worse in the eyes of some and we aren’t even given a choice if we want to play with this.

how? how can anyone be constructive if the devs don’t even respond to anything in this forum or on reddit? all they have done for the last few years is lie to us and make shitty DLCs that are ruining the game. I am so fucking fed up with them forcing changes on everyone, and they don’t even have the deceny to let us play on older versions/datasets, like they did in aoe2HD.

you are a loud minority

I don’t think you have the expertise to state that objectively.

possibly, but we don’t know that because the devs aren’t even bothering to poll what the community wants. even if I am in the minority, I don’t think the game should be forcibly changed against my will.

never stated that it was “objective”. of course, this is my opinion. some people will think that video games as a whole are a waste of time, therefore all of this is wasted effort.

Every topic you listed is not about design changes.
Bug fixes are made by other team, I’m sure of it.
A team without designers and artists.

fair enough, points to that:

  • do we need design changes?
  • artists could work on the much requested (optional) architecture sets and regional unit skins
  • designers could make campaigns for the civs that don’t have them yet (I assume that’s the designers you are talking about?)
  • the people in charge of balancing should look at the siege towers that are plaguing every game at the moment

instead they are working on a massive overhaul of a core system. I don’t think this is the kind of change that should be dropped one everyone with a clearer sense of feedback and an opt-out. I want to play the game i bought

hm…

I just had a light-up on one point that I had simmering for long time already.

The issue of “communicating issues to the devs”. As an example is here named the demo.
It was always “complained” about demos because they are just these “run into the enemy units and blow out suicide missions”.
However, these complaints were NOT meant for the devs to remove demos from the waterplay. People just hated on them like they hate on huskarls and other units because they are so abnoxious. However, there is this fine line of “hating on, but actually NOT want it to be removed” and “this is just bad for the game” hate. Which is often not even communicated, sometimes people even chose to just ignore the things they really dislike.

And this ofc makes it really awkward for devs, because there is no real way to distinct these two or even worse - often it looks actually the way around and devs may actually remove things the player LOVE to hate on…

And the demos are possibly a good example fot that. Though ofc there might be players who actually want them to removed. However I feel like the majority of hate against them wasn’t aimed in that direction. And in order to hate on demos we need them to be actually USED (and successfully so).

i think there is some important insight in what you are saying, but at the same time the devs are making no effort to see what the community thinks. when was the last time (if ever) that the devs made a real effort to communicate with the community? have we had a single opportunity to ask them why they are doing what they are doing? when was the last time that they have even posted a poll here or on reddit (other than the old map votes)?

i think it is genuinly difficult to gauge what people dislike, and what people like to hate. But at the same time they aren’t even pretending they care, let alone do they care.

Yes, we do. Why is it even a question? There’s ton of threads and videos about it.

I guess they actually are working on it, but with low priority and/or it takes a lot of time and effort and can’t affect DLC release frequency. We got a lot of new unique graphics recently and they came all at once. It’s reasonable to expect more of it.

No, I was referring to designers of civilizations and units, not campaigns.
I hope Forgotten Empires (and their partners) have learned with CaptureAge how to create campaign-only DLCs because we don’t need another V&V…
And also pro players, specially, would prefer if new civs were being added in a slower pace from now on.

They probably are working on it but wouldn’t release balance changes in the middle of RedBull qualifiers.

Exactly. Previously only galley line needed university. Mass galleon being OP in the late game was justified due to more investment cost. Now Hulk destroys everything and they are cheapest to upgrade among all 3 main ship line.

supposedly hulks will be nerfed in the patch that goes live with the dlc…supposedly.

Why do whales give gold rather than food? Is there any logic to this?

Yes:

Which part of this Wikipedia page do you think answers the question? My understanding is that in the Middle Ages, whales were primarily hunted for food, and this page seems to corroborate this.

From that Wikipedia article:

Whaling was practiced as an organized industry as early as 875 AD.

The whaling industry spread throughout the world and became very profitable in terms of trade and resources.

Archaeological evidence suggests the earliest known forms of whaling date to at least 3000 BC, practiced by the Inuit and other peoples in the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

I may also add that whales already provide gold in AoE3.

TL;DR: Ancient practice, whale hunting was present in the Middle Ages when it became an industry.
